Can Viagra Cause Blindness?
By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP ONLINE

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. health officials are examining rare reports of blindness among some men using the impotence drug Viagra.

First it's masturbation that leads to blindness, now it's Viagra-enhanced fucking!

Next revealed, will be that condoms rot your dick. (Just ask the Pope.)

"It's well known that the drugs can cause a minor vision problem in which men who take the drugs see a whitish-hue when looking at the color blue, Ohl and other urologists say. That occurs in 3% to 5% of men, Ohl said. He knows of no men bothered enough by the temporary color changes that they stop taking the drugs. About 23 million men worldwide have taken Viagra since its approval in 1998. There is no proof that the drug caused the blindness, Pfizer spokesman Daniel Watts said.

Spokespersons for Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline PLC, that distributes Levitra in the United States with Schering-Plough Corp, echoed Pfizer's cautions, saying they were confident in their products and knew of no reports of blindness."

That's TERRIBLY unfair!

You're not supposed to retain any memory of anything before 2001.* How else can public information pamphlets and PR announcements have their desired effect?

* Make that the end of 2004.

The Lancet, a well regarded British medical journal states that Vioxx side effects were known for years and should have been recalled in 2000. [It's voluntary withdrawal was announced on September 30, 2004].

Yeah, but people still smoke...

And if cigarettes cured your erectile disfunction, by now, we'd consider lung cancer a sign of achievement.

*shrug*

"Who am I to judge?" asks Q_C, the casual While-drinking smoker who hasn't yet needed the aid of a drug to achieve erection.

The FDA says its still too early to establish a cause and effect relationship between Viagra and NAION, vs. other underlying factors, anatomical defects, or combinations with these and Viagra. Still, it's prudent for the FDA to investigate.

But in the end, after all the studies are done, the medical community will offer a choice to men: do you want to take x% chance of going blind with Viagra, or do you want your boner?

From my experience of men, they will hope they have fucked themselves to death before the problem arises.

In any case, they will refuse to look at the proofs until it is too late.

There an none so blind . . . etc.
