Once upon a time the indigents (terminal Drug and Alcohol abusers with the insane thrown in) were actively discouraged public spaces. You could go about your business in town without being molested by a panhandler, or worse. You could take you kids to the local park on a sunny day and soak up the sun whilst they enjoyed themselves.

Then a new mayor was elected, a kinder, gentler, soul. The new policy was to let the vermin have the run of the town. You can't walk, and in some cases drive, anywhere without being molested or out and out assaulted. The public parks became out houses and 'shooting galleries.'

Public pressure built to clean the place up so what was the solution? They put used needle boxes in the public parks. They have proudly announced that the boxes 'work' and that the loose needle problem has been reduced by half!!!!

Whooppee, we now have half the needles with all the piss and shit. They make this astounding victory they're proclaiming sound like an add for some reconstituted fast food.

Only obliquely related:

The UK and other Western European countries had similar problems with their city centers, after they opened their borders indiscriminately to Eastern Europe and Muslim countries.

Instead of picking and choosing, they are now seeing their once torist-ee city centers being popullated by Eastern European pickpocketters, gypsies who eat all the swans from lakes and use their children to beg, and knife-wielding Muslims who rape Swedish girls, and squatters.

indigent means poor. i'm sure you knew that. in fact, i'm certain that you do.

I didn't have ethnicity in mind (see Eastern Europeans). My point was that, unlike former colonies, they let anyone in without a rigurous check of their criminal backgrounds.

My example was only related to Ish's as far as the poorly applied inclussiveness mantra is concerned.
It often backfires.

Got a point pointless?

Yes, they are poor but they are not THE poor. Throughout my life I've known a lot of poor folk, still do. They live their lives as human beings with dignity and polite concern for others. In other words they aren't drug dependent or insane wastrels.

He's right and you're wrong.

Even more so because you say "once upon time, the indigents (terminal Drug and Alcohol abusers with the insane thrown in)" but once upon a time the indigents (or poor people) weren't terminal drug addicts.

I guess it's another Franzia Friday Night. ;)

Ya know it's dudes like this that give box wine a bad name. Franzia Fruity Red aint bad but you get these asshat alcoholics pouring it down their cocksuckers and it ruins a good thing.

You're full of shit. They are feral human beings. They are poor because they're feral, they aren't feral because they're poor.

No, he's absolutely right. And if you knew anything about the history of homelessness in USA, you would realize that, too.

Someone who's drug dependent isn't - in theory poor.
How much do they spend weekly on drugs?

In saying that, I'm not hard on them because of their habit. Life isn't the same for all.
It's the callous 'I don't mind of I expose kids to used needles'.

By that low standard, you're an "excellent" parent. You used to brag about not taking your kids to the doctor for 10 years, sparing their tender eyes from looking at needles.

So, what is the solution to these crime infested parks?

"Actively discourage" drug addicts and such from converging in them?

Maybe herd them all out? To where?

Medicaid for all or mental health services? We can only afford one.

In 2009, funding for mental health was slashed to give more money for government welfare programs.

Addressing the 'poor' issue.

It seems that over the past 30-40 years the observation, "They're poor ya know?" has become an excuse for all aberrant behavior. And just what is the threshold? As pointed out by Beew, they certainly have the money to buy the drugs/alcohol? Where is that coming from?

Again I reiterate, poverty is as a result of their decisions/behavior, NOT necessarily the cause.
