Just after they finished with the upgrades last month i noticed i couldn't change my Avatar. I don't have comp or pc so i had to put in the url's where it said: Enter Avatar URL instead up uploading from comp.So for past month i've been stuck using same Avatar..
Everytime i tried to change Avatar i get: "The uploaded file is not a valid Gif, Jpg, or Png file. Please ensure that it is and try again"
i even tried putting AV's i've already used before and get the same thing

Tonight i tried to reset my fields and took off old Avatar hoping that would do something. well it did now i have No Avatar..
Can anyone please please help me or direct me where i can go or whom i can talk with about this? maybe i pushed wrong button somewhere and blocked myself from putting AV's up??

Yeah, I cannot switch-off the "Do Not Use An Avatar" option under "edit avatar". Don't I need to get that switched off before I can upload my first one?

Any advice is appreciated :)

So you're not using the same computer each time/you're accessing from a public computer? If so, I'm assuming you're logging in and out each time?

On the URLs, do the file extensions end in .jpg, .gif, or .png? If you post a URL you're having issues with, I'd be willing to try it.

Is the "Do not use an avatar" button clicked right now?

Is there any way you can access a computer on which you can save the image(s), then try uploading? Maybe a trusted friend could do it for you?

My only other thought is that sometimes hotlinking can be buggy. You could try saving the images to a free online space like Yahoo Briefcase or savefile.com, and then try entering the URL as you did before.

I'd maybe go through these options first, and maybe Weird Harold or one of the other LitTechnoGurus will drop by or you could PM.

Sure, Biorgium, read the FAQ sticky. It's the fifth one down, under "AVATARS/", I believe. :)

I don't really have an answer for this one. I do know tha vBulletin's error reporting is sometimes less than accurate and don't actually reflect what is causing the problem.

To use a URL to post an avatar, I suspect the problem are similar to the problem people encounter uing the IMG tags:

The URL must be an unambiguous link to an image file rather than a just a link that returns and image from a database.

The URL cannot be protected by hotlink blocking, password protection, member's only access, etc.

AND, in the case of an avatar, it must meet the dimension and filesize limits for an avatar, just as if it wa being uploaded instead of linked; vBulletin will try to copy the image into the avatar database rather than hotlinking it every time it's called for.

Without knowing what URL is involved, there is no way to know which of the several tests are failing. Since this is a problem that only appeared since the last upgrade, it is entirely possible that there is a bug in the new software version that Manu needs to report to vBulletin.

If Tasty_Teaze cannot reuse the avatar that worked under the previous version of vBulletin then Manu needs to be told about the problem, including the URLs that have been rejected.

I am on MSNTV2 and never had problems with my AVs until last month when Manu said all the upgrades were completed...
file sizes were ok and i also tried my pics from photobucket.com which i have used before every AV i have saved i can not use now, even new ones i've tried...it seems to me where it says "Enter Avatar URL" in edit avatar is not working any longer...
i've checked and rechecked and i have not blocked anything..

Ok so how do i let Manu know about this problem? i have already pm'd him right after i noticed the problem weeks ago and not sure how or who to inform. I'm almost positive it's from last upgrade cause day he announced it was first day i could not change my av and have never had a problem before then. All of my URLs have been rejected and i have over a 100 of them if not more.

For this sort of problem, the "Contact US" link at the bottom of each forum page is the best choice. I just sent a mesage referencing this thread via that link.
