I read everywhere that all I need to do to send and receive notice of private messages is to turn on private messaging.

There's no useful information available on how to turn on private messaging. Some say go to "Settings" which I don't see anywhere, other say go to "Options," which I see, but have nothing that mentions PM's.

Any help?

In the Forum pages, NOT your "Lit control panel"

Click on your name/account menu at the top of the page.

In that menu, "Privacy" is where you

"allow users to" -> "start conversations with you"

This is what enables people sending you messages.

"Preferences" is where you find

"Email options" -> "Receive email when a new conversation message is received"

I think the non-email, on-page Notification is always enabled for private messages.

Thank you! I appreciate the quick response!

I do see that and have that set for members only.

I guess the next part of that question is sending messages. I've tried a couple, but both times I've had to put in a wonky code before sending the message.

Is that normal? Do I have to do that every time I contact or reply to someone here?

Maybe

It's for preventing bots with fake accounts from sending spam messages to members.
