Would someone be so kind as to inform me why the PM icon shows I have 3 messages however none are present. They are shown as stored, but I don't find a way to bring up stored folder.

There have been some prolific spammers as of late. Maybe, if you had three spam messages in your inbox and those particular accounts were subsequently banned I think that's where you see the ghost messages because the messages are gone because they can't be referenced because there's no account attached to them anymore.
