"Why the fuck do I always get the shit assignments?"

US Marshal, Melinda Martin slumped back in the chair she was sitting in. Her boss just looked at her and sighed as he shook his head. "Do you really want me to answer that?" He asked before taking a sip of his coffee. "Listen, Melinda, we both know why you're getting this assignment. You're still under investigation by internal affairs and until they complete it, you're on light duty. I had to pull a lot of strings just keep you on, got that?"

"Yes sir.." she replied as she looked at the folder with her assignment. "But prisoner transfer, really? Wouldn't it be easier to just have stayed behind a desk all day so IA can keep an eye on me like usual?"

"Perhaps," Marshal William Lodge, "But then again, everyone else is on assignment and since this transfer is a 'shit job' we thought of you." He face was dead serious.

Melinda couldn't help but smile, "It's not like I have a choice right?" She sighed as she pulled out the picture of prisoner Joshua Knox. He was involved in crimes since he was a teen and the older he got, the more serious his crimes got too.

The job was simple, transfer him from Virginia to Washington State. But because of his crime affiliations, the transfer was to be kept low key and done as quickly as possible but yet that still meant slowly. Because travelling low key usually meant driving. Driving from one part of the coast to the other was not Melinda's idea of a shitty assignment, it was just plain fucked up.

"He is expected in Seattle in no less than 7 days Melinda. You know the proceedure. Make sure he gets there. That's it. Simple. Now get out." William went back to his paperwork and Melinda knew better than try to ask him anything else.

At a very young age, Melinda knew she wanted to be in law enforcement. She joined the local police force as soon as she graduated high school. She also graduated from the police academy as one of the top female officers. After a few years on the force, she wanted more. So then she became a US Marshal. Now because of what happened just a little over 2 months ago, she was practically demoted to prisoner transfer....

"Fucking great.." she said under breath as she left her boss' office.

Joshua Know had grown up on the streets. His father left before J even had a chance to know him. His mother tried to provide things, but it wasn't easy. There never seemed to be enough of anything..... food, clothes, and even shelter.

J had fallen into the wrong group when he was a teenager. He started running with a crowd that was involved in petty crimes... nothing big, just enough to provide a little more than they already had. They were all from broken and less-fortunate families, so, a little more money, or a little more food was worth the risk of getting arrested..... and J did, several times. It broke his mother's heart. She thought that the extra money, and extra food that he was bringing home came from a job that J had. She cried all night the first time he got arrested... that was when she realized that he was stealing not working.

Through the years J grew physically as well as criminally. He graduated from petty crimes to more serious ones.... burglary, robbery, assault. He spent time as a strongman for a loan shark and book maker, and eventually gained his confidence. He moved into bigger things.... like extortion and racketeeering. That was what had him here. One of his bosses rivals had accused him of attempting to extort money from him. J was guilty of a lot of things, but it wasn't true in this case. In fact, the criminal charges were just a way of isolating J, because the rival had put a contract out on J.

Sitting in the jail cell had J aggravated. How had he been so stupid. There was no way he should have been caught. He started to think about the way he was captured and he was now convinced that somebody on his "team" had set him up. Now all he had to do was sit and wait. He knew that they were going to have to transport him across the country. That is where his opportunity to escape would come... not from this jail cell.

Something about this assignment didn't feel right. Melinda could feel it in her bones as she walked into the holding area to pick up the 'package'.

Perhaps it was just because of how the week was going. Or perhaps it was because she hadn't gotten a lot of sleep lately...

Whatever the hell it was, she hated it.

Earlier this morning she had gone over the file of Josh Knox. He didn't look like a Josh...perhaps it was because she didn't know him, or wasn't the arresting officer...what ever the case was, she would be glad to get it all over with in the end.

The process to sign out Mr. Knox went fairly smoothly. In fact, those behind the counter didn't seem to care one way or another who signed out the prisoner, just as long as they had one less person to keep an eye on.

Melinda signed out for the prisoner and a vehicle for the long ride across country. Once it was all in order, she went to Knox's cell with a guard, who opened it up for her, "Let's go." she said, looking at him, hopefully giving him the look saying that she wasn't going to put up with his shit.

Once the vehicle was pulled around, Melinda guided Knox to the back, shackled him in and made sure that was locked before shutting the door. Coming around to the driver's side, she got in, filled out a form on clipboard before taking off.

This was going to be a long drive.

Josh looked up as the woman walked into the holding cell and told him to get up. He laughed out loud. "Are you serious. They sent a female to pick me up. Come on now. The must not like you very much."

He got up and allowed her to handcuff him. There was no way he was going to get out here, but he now knew how his rivals were going to get him. Only one person had been sent to transport him, and she probably saw it as a punishment detail. He was going to have to be on guard right from the start, and figure out how to get out of her custody.

He allowed her to place him in the back of the SUV. This was perfect. He would have a view of everything.... everything was right in front of him. The setup was going to be okay. He would just bide his time. The opportunity would present itself in due time.

He sat back and relaxed. It was going to be a long drive across the country. He decided that he was going to make the trip a challenge for his escort. "Hey there missy. I didn't use the facilities before we left. I have to void. Can you pull over somewhere please?"

Filling out the paperwork took almost no time and Knox was cooperative as she secured him inside the vehicle. Soon, they were off when she heard the prisoner ask for the facilities.

"Yeah, well, you should have thought about that before we left.... Right?"

Melinda knew she wasn't going to hear the end of it so she added, "Shut up and wait, we'll stop in an hour or so."

Josh smiled in the back seat. He was under her skin and he didn't know what he had done to get there. That was okay though. It would help him to kill some time on this long trip.... until he had the opportunity to make his escape anyway.

"What seems to be the problem? What have I done to upset you? It doesn't seem like you are real excited to have this assignment. I think you should be mad at your boss, not at me. After all. He sent you. He is probably some kind of sexist... after all, he gave this task to you instead of a male."

"I will hold it as long as you want me to. I will just sit back here and be quiet. You won't have to tell me to shut up again." Josh put his head back and looked out the window taking in the scenery. It would be a long trip without someone to talk to and pass the time, but he would make due.
