Og watch the youtube video report prepared by Christopher Hitchens one year after her death. It is very good in that he let the facts speak for themselves.I don't think it was wholly true that the British elite hated Princess Diana. The BBC did. She could and did embarrass the Royals but nowhere near as much as Harry and Meghan or Prince Andrew.
Many of the elite liked Diana and especially her charitable activities e.g. with AIDS and mines. Some felt she had had a raw deal from Prince Charles but he also could have been pushed into that marriage.
The British Public's reaction to Diana's death was overemotional, almost as if she had been a saint or a national treasure. In retrospect, she had been a hard-working royal and generally a force for good, which she probably would have continued after the divorce.
What the public reaction would have been if she had married into the AlFayed family? No one knows but the Alfayeds were not well-regarded.
