All right.
I feel comfortable starting this thread knowing I'm not the only person shaken, stirred, and moved to tears by what is most likely one of the most incredible books ever written, and a movie that, on its own without comparison to the novel, still charms the pants off of me every time I see it.
The infamous Morgenstern debate among TPB fanatics is this: In the beginning credits of the movie, for you NON-book readers (And after this I'm going to go back to the movie thread and post a few quotes you miss in the movie.. Just to get people to read the book), Fred Savage's Grandpa begins to read it:
"The Princess Bride, By S. Morgenstern."
Those of you who read the book know: Goldman starts the intro by saying, "This is my favorite book in all the world, although I have never read it."
His father supposedly read it to him, only the 'good parts,' and when he grew up he abridged it. But the dilemma between TPB fans is this:
Did Morgenstern ever exist, or was he an incredible literary device dreamed up by Goldman?
I mean, it's obvious to be able to look up the fact that the country of Florin never existed; but did Morgenstern, who was supposedly the country's foremost historian and environmental activist?
I don't know. I love this book so much, and its tender exchanges between father and son that he throws in between chapters and the heartwrenching stories about the problems he's had with the Morgenstern estate..
I have no problem talking to people who don't believe in God, but when my mother told me she didn't believe in Morgenstern, I almost cried.
Opinions?
