"I can't believe you put this off for so long." Lisa's mother glared at her as she pressed the phone into her daughter's hand. "You need to set up an appointment. You're nearly 20 years old, young lady. You should have had this done 2 years ago..."
Lisa sighed, frowning at the phone. "I read I only needed it if I was sexually active. I'm... I'm not. I don't see what the big deal is." She glanced back to her mother, grimacing as she got 'the look'. "Okay, okay... I'll see how soon they can get me in. I'm just... scared. It sounds like it's really going to hurt."
"I'll be honest, it's not the most comfortable thing. But its important. So no matter how weird it might feel, you just go with it. If you want me to go with you-"
"For that? No way. I don't need EVERYONE staring at my crotch." Lisa smiled, walking her mom to the door. "I'll find a doctor and see how quickly they can get me in. I promise to give you a call after it, too." With her mother on the way back to her car, Lisa looked at the phone once again, making another face before picking up the phone book. She had no idea which doctor to call. Her choice ended with simply calling the first number to catch her eye. "Hi. I, um... need to set up a first visit. No, never had one before. Tomorrow? That, um, that fast, huh? Okay. Lisa Hawthorne. Two pm? Okay... thanks."
---------
The next morning went by far too fast for Lisa's liking. Her few classes at the community college, a bite to eat with Kevin from her Creative Writing class, and soon her cell phone was chirping its reminder of her appointment. Her nose wrinkled as she turned it off, Kevin looking at it blankly. "What's up?"
"Doctor's appointment. I don't really want to go."
"Doc- Something wrong?" A concern came to his face, looking from the phone then back to Lisa.
"No, no- Just a physical. I... haven't gone in awhile." *Like ever, to this one.* She frowned again at that thought, twisting the straw wrapper in her fingertips. "But, hey. I gotta get going. I'll see you Monday, okay? We have to keep working on that tag team story. It's due next Wednesday!" With that, she got up, giving him a quick hug before heading to her car. The office wasn't that far from her apartment, just a few blocks away. Still, her stomach was in knots over the whole idea. She wasn't fully sure on what happened during one of these. She'd heard horror stories on the 'duck-thing' that they used. That sounded horrible!
She stopped home before heading to the office, figuring a quick shower might be in order. After all, if the doctor was going to be peeking down there, she should make sure she was presentable, right? She hesitated as she started to turn off the water, looking down at her mound. She used to shave. Perhaps... Well, it would help the doctor view things better, right? She turned the water back on, delicately clearing away the hair. There. The more she could help get this thing over with, the happier she'd be. A pair of light blue lace panties and the bra to go with it were hidden beneath her jeans as she redressed, tugging her tank back on before heading out.
her hands were shaking as she drove off to the office. *Remember what mom said. You have to do this. Just because it feels weird, doesn't mean you should run away. Every woman has to do this. The doctor knows what they're doing.* She took a deep breath as she parked the car, getting out and slinging her purse over her shoulder as she headed inside.
The receptionist beamed a smile at her, sliding open her little glass window. "Hi there! Name?"
"Lisa... Haw-"
"Ohhh, yes, Miss Hawthorne. First visit, hun? Don't be scared. He's quite gentle about it."
"H-He?" Lisa choked a bit with that. She hadn't even thought about asking if this doctor was a guy or not. The listing hadn't given a name. Just The Medical Office of Southern Hopewell. She gave the woman a forced smile, going to sit down. There were degrees on the wall, and- a picture. Was that him? She stared at it, swallowing as she clutched her purse. He was a doctor. He knew what he was doing. She kept reminding herself of that, glancing at the degrees again.
She sat there, waiting for her name to be called.
*There's nothing to be afraid of. Nothing.*
