How many NYC smokers are packing up the cigarettes? I see the price of a pack will rise to $7.50!! (Taxation, yet again)

The British Government did this...still does..hammers the price of cigarettes every budget...they wonder why they are not receiving as much income from cigaretes. The real reason is that people buy them, in there 000's from France/Belgium and Spain, especially as now, there are no customs to pass through......the price of a pack in the UK is around $6.25....to buy them in Spain etc...$3.

I wonder if the same will happen here? Will NYC folk buy from the internet?

Of course people will buy from the Internet. They also buy from New Jersey and Connecticut, and above all they will buy from a Virginia and the Carolinas where taxes on cigarettes are minimal.

We lost the war on demon rum long ago. We have been losing the war on drugs now for four decades, but even with no end in sight, by now everyone, even the narks, know that we have lost again at telling people how to run their lives. No doubt about it, in the end we will lose the war against tobacco also. It never seems to occur to the press and media that our people will decide for themselves what is best for them, even if their omnipotent betters have a different opinion.

The politicians don't have the guts to make tobacco illegal, and the over educated intellectual snobs who run the press and media know it. The best the know-it-all do-gooders can do is to punish those citizens who disagree with the current party line. The $7.50 a pack will be a disaster for everyone but the smugglers, and even worse, it will create another generation of scofflaws.

There is a bright side . With any luck the voters will revolt and a sizable number of New York politicians who are lackeys of the politically correct newspapers and TV networks will need to find honest employment.

Cigarettes are running about $8.50/pack here now. As always, the underground market is flourishing. A lot of people will drive to the reservations to get their cigarettes a hell of a lot cheaper.

Let's make this easy...like in the UK...they (Governments) hit easy targets....cigarettes and petrol (gas) although here in the States, that has not yet been taxed out of this worl. In England it's circa $6 per gallon!

Exactly! Which means the tax imposed will bring in LESS revenue as more and more use the internet or the reservations...just like the UK assholes have realized!

But it won't will it? Does the price of crack or heroin put them off? I have to admit, I wish I didn't smoke but I do...but i don't nor won't touch drugs

This was on Dateline Sunday night. The expert said the "sin" tax, based on history, will both bring in more revenue as well as cause a small percentage of smokers to quit completely. Both are good things. Sorry, I don't remember the percentages.

I feel that you are right Cheyanne..but I also believe that if EVERYONE stopped smoking, they would have to raise personal taxation to an addtional 18 % to make up for that lost income...or CUT services...plus put thousands out of jobs..it's a very vicious circle.
