Millions of Americans are disappointed in the Supreme Court decision on student debt

And millions are pleased that presidential overreach was curtailed. Only the Legislative branch can legally authorize spending.

Where do you stand?

I think the Supreme Court is overworked and producing poor decisions. The number of justices should be increased to match the number of circuit courts like was done several times in the 19th century.

Congress can and should reduce or eliminate student debts for its citizens. Republicans ought to be behind the effort since, just like reducing taxes, it will result in more prosperity and higher revenues.

I agree with this.

Even though I can at least understand the logic of the student loan case based on constitutional principles, there are other recent cases where the activist nature of the court is quite alarming, and has produced profoundly poor decisions without Constitutional merit.

Edit: And yes, agree with Phrodeau; Congress can and should reduce or eliminate student debts for it's citizens, and should have the power to do so. But as the court has ruled, it cannot be a unilateral decision by the president himself.

the decision was overturned because of where the authority lies to make the decision. Much as i applauded President Biden's attempts to help, even Nancy Pelosi said a while back that he can't do that...not the way he was trying to do it and have it stick if challenged.

so now he's going to try and do it another way:

Biden said his administration will work to forgive student loan debt through the Higher Education Act of 1965, which authorizes the education secretary to modify, waive or compromise federal student loan under certain circumstances.

"In my view, it's the best path that remains to provide as many borrowers as possible with debt relief," he said in remarks from the White House after the court ruled his original plan exceeded executive authority.
"This new path is legally sound," Biden said, but added, "It's going to take longer."

Biden said he directed his administration to "move as quickly as possible under the law."

The decisions need to be made at the lowest level possible. We need to reduce the size of the federal government and return to States Rights with minimal Federal intervention.

in my opinion, there are certain 'inalienable rights' that should be law across the land... such as equality for all, good access to free/affordable healthcare for ALL, standard rates of income tax across the board, a consistently high standard of free to access education, and standards in courts/prisons comparable to all others in the nation. probably some others. local stuff should devolve to individual states

BS. You mean you hate the Constitution and don't want it upheld. Tell us how any of the recent decisions in the news are poor or do not comply with the Constitution.

Federal government is too far removed from the reality of issues facing the people who pay their taxes.

Look at the wages and benefits of politicians and explain how they become Billionaires. Term limits and no retirement would be a big step in getting them under control since we pay their salaries.

Look at what they say and see what they do. It’s not the same. Also why are they not balancing the budget. They ignore it and print money and we pay higher prices due to inflation.

Educational institutions keep raising the cost and lowering the standards. People pay a lot of money for education and then can’t find jobs. Much has been written about the poor performance of the system and the inequality of the cost to the taxpayers.

Why should people who got student loans get to walk away from their debt. What about the millions who scrimped to pay off their loan. I went to college on my own dime and it turned out to be a waste of time. My major had zero to do with what I ended up wanting to do with my life. You pay your money and you take your chances. NO FREE RIDES

when they voted 8 to 1 for allowing his ILLEGALS in

Brandon et all had NO ISSUES

because a lot of the people saying this had very minor debts incurred in comparison to those kids have to rack up today.

people used to be able to go to college, get a job, pay off their debts, get married, buy a house, raise kids... today's kids are likely to still be trying to pay off their debts 20, even 30 years down the line,, WITHOUT being able to afford a mortgage, independently raise a family etc..., etc..., etc.... tuition fees have sky rocketed, so if you want a college educaction it means either getting a full scholarship (if you are incredibly lucky/gifted) or burying yourself almost to retirement in debts the older gens just didn't have to carry.

You think going to law school was cheap?

I paid my way and graduated without any debt. If I can do it, anyone can. There are exceptions but most of the students of today are nothing but lazy assed pussies.

Not good enough, Butters. If you can not afford to pay back a loan don't take out a loan. Hard times happened to me too and everyone else. No bailout for us.

More millions are not.

You borrow? You pay it back. Pretty simple fact of life. YOUR college bill is NOT MY college bill. Grow up. You are NOT entitled. Nuf sed

What happens in your land without Xi's express personal permission?
Federal government is too far removed from the reality of issues facing the people who pay their taxes.
Xi propaganda to try to weaken the US.

Unpayable debts won't be paid. Student loans are one piece of the national debt that will be defaulted in the next few years.

They SIGNED a CONTRACT.
