Will there ever be a female Roman Catholic cardinal? As President?

Haha. I kid, of course.

Someone said that women used to have a ceremonial function in Roman Catholic processions. Watching the All-Boy Revue yesterday, it was hard to believe that it used to happen, much less believe that it might again.

It's probably for the best. Give us girls a litergical robe to hide under, and our hands will be up to no good.

You forgot "Hell freezing over," except that will happen first, before any of these things.

I put openly gay president. Of course he won't be out until he's president and then the repubs will find a reason to impeach him/her:D

Yeah, in two millenia, the one sin never committed by a Pope is being female.

Not if he's one of them.

That would be sweet, wouldn't it? They elect one of their own and he comes out of the closet in the Lincoln Bedroom. Naked. With Jude Law. During the White House Christmas Tour on live TV.

That would be funny. It would be even better if he could some how be a gay democrat disquised as a straight republican until after inauguration . . never happen though.

With his wife standing nobly by...
"I am... a gay American...and Jude Law? ...He's one of our finest actors..."

When an openly gay British Monarch who faithfully practises the Muslim religion is elected President (through the loophole installed for Arnold Schwarzenegger) Jerry Falwell passes out the Kool-Aide and Pat Robertson performs suttee.

As long as we are fantasizing, lets fantasize.

Ahem. Any Brits out there want to demonstrate some school spirit for the monarchy? I know there are long odds against the Queen letting Charles take the throne, even if she has to have herself taxidermied. But what about William? And the corgis?

but even in Burley's wild fantasy, there is no female Pope.

Wish I could see it, but I can't...

The British Monarchy will endure

Apart from the discussions whether Prince Charles is suitable - the poor chap has been understudying the role for forty years - he is overtrained; the best thing in favour of our constitution monarchy is the alternative.

Very few people would want Tony Blair as President, nor would they have wanted Mrs Thatcher. Power is one thing. Checks and balances that work are another.

Our armed forces; our police forces; our civil servants and our secret services are ultimately responsible to the Crown not to the current administration. Their roles can only be changed by Act of Parliament which requires discussion, negotiation, votes and the Monarch's consent. No Prime Minister or Minister can say to those bodies 'Do this' unless that power has been specifically granted.

'The Crown' is not just the person of the Monarch. It hasn't been since Magna Carta. It changed radically in the English Civil War and the revolution of 1688. The powers of the Crown are exercised by the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarch acting in agreement.

If the British Monarchy were to be abolished a significant stabilising influence, not just in constitutional terms but in people's perceptions, would be removed from the UK's power structure. I don't think the republicans are ever going to win the day given the example of US, French and other Presidents to show how supine a republic can be.

A Muslim as President of the US? Why not? That President wouldn't favour the Christian Right. A female gay Muslim might be a couple of steps too far.

A female cardinal? There is supposed to have been a female pope. That was a Protestant lie but theoretically feasible given the way popes dress. A female cardinal who was obviously female? That might take a few years yet.

It's nice to see some traditions endure. Rule Brittania, etc.

But I'm disappointed that you think your countrymen won't want their own Dubya. At least half of us are willing to let you have ours.

I kind offer Sher, but no, really no. We couldn't just couldn't deprive you of his presence.

*backing away thankfully*.

Clearly you don't believe the "Pope Joan" legend. That one may have happened already; though, of course, 'she' was not openly female.
