Yes, prayer works.

The question you failed to ask is, what do you think prayer is really intended for?

Prayer works. I don't how. But it does.

I think that's the point. If we knew how it worked, it would be magic, not prayer.

What do you mean by helpful?

I can't think of anytime when I have prayed about something that anything in the world has changed.

I have often felt better about something after I have prayed about it or felt more confident just from getting the problem off my chest.

If you mean helpful in that way then yes I think it does. I could probably get the same feeling just by talking to someone about the problem.

good question Blackie.
I will answer that if I may;

Prayer was intended for the purpose of worship and to show respect......

not to ask for things.

Well... maybe.

I believe you cannot pray to change a situation or person. The best that can be achieved through sincere prayer is a change in your perception; for strength, courage and faith.

You mean, you cannot pray for the strength to change yourself?

Well clasic theology has three types of prayer:
Petition, which is asking for something.
Medition or Contemplation which is opening yourself to God.
Adoration, which is simple worship.

What is it for? to put us in tune with our Creator.

I love taking over other people's threads... Sorry WD. What were you getting at?

A prayer is talking to God. Sometimes it is as simple as thanking him for a beautiful summer day that is just perfect as I drive down the road. Sometimes my prayer may be a request for help for others. Sometimes it is a request for help for me. Most often I will pray for God to do what is best in any given situation, even if I don't understand what thay may be.

I'd like to agree with Cheyenne here. I'm not 'into prayer' (I don't mean that disrespectfully) but I think that prayer is best used to ask for guidence.

I don't pray to worship. Nor do I ask for guidance or favors. Prayer to me is an opening of myself, more akin to meditation, I suppose, than what's generally thought of as prayer. I use no words (purposefully, at least) and when I really let go it becomes physical. Sensations range from giddy to blissful.

I can soar in prayer and when I'm there all sorts of good things come to me. I often find myself in tears.

No, I just didn't want this thread to end up in the courts.

Has anyone heard about that study in which some cancer patients were selected for prayer? The patients themselves were not even aware of it and the people praying didn't KNOW the people for whom they were praying, only the names.

According to the study, the people who received prayers had better than twice the recovery rate of those who didn't.

Actually (supposedly), it was a scientific study. I don't remember the details of it and it may have all been an Urban Legend. That's why I wanted to know if anyone else had heard of it or knew better than I do.

I think it's true what they say, partying too hard during your college years DOES kill brain cells.
