I have read good reviews of these and am downloading them now and plan on trying them out this week. They're all free:

Find duplicate files fast, easy, and free! DupeLocater can search thousands of files in a matter of seconds. It does NOT care about file names or dates, only the contents of the files. Files are considered duplicates If, and ONLY if, their entire contents are identical. Bit for bit. Duplicate files are exactly the same size, and contain exactly the same data.

It never hurts to download another tweaking tool since each one has its own advantages and features, and MR Tech Systray can do impressive stuff. It tweaks Windows annoyances for improved performance, cleans the hard drive and browsers, gets system information, and comes with a built-in MP3 toolkit. Right- clicking on the MR Tech Systray icon in the System Tray provides more options. The program is different from the familiar tweaking tools, and geeks who love to tweak will want to add this to their toolbox.

Speed: we can't get enough of it! We want everything to work faster. When CD-ROMS first came out, they were slow as snails. In a few short years, CD-ROMs became 40 to 50 times faster than their ancestors. Along with speed came a curse: noise, vibrations, and short spindown times. They work great for transferring large amounts of data, but they're plagued by poor performance and noise when playing games and audio or viewing a file. CD-ROM Tool gives you the ability to detect speed, change speed and spindown, do drive-locking, and manipulate other controls. Making these changes reduces drive noise, prevents spindown, and increases reading accuracy.

And this one I already mentioned in its own thread but I'll put it here too just to be complete.

MoodAmp is a unique music organizer that allows you to play your MP3 files based on your current mood. It can automatically scan your drive and catalog all your music files. You can then choose from various different mood settings (neutral, happy, romantic, sad, etc.) and MoodAmp will play the files that match the mood. In addition, you can also add a personal rating to each title. MoodAmp can automatically remove duplicate files (even if the filename and ID3 tags differ) using MoodAmp MP3 Fingerprint
technology. The program uses either Windows Media Player or WinAmp as an external player.

DupeLocater is GREAT! I had more duplicate files in various locations than I had ever imagined.

This could be very useful for those of us that like to make AVs. Its free and there are both Windows and Mac versions of this program.

Mass resize of images - You could go in and fix each image manually, but who has that much time? Resize! is an application that simply lets you choose a folder and resize all the images in that specific folder. You can decide whether you want to do proportional, box, or independent resizing. You can also work in percentages or in pixels when resizing a folder of images.

This could be very useful, for example, when you have scanned a bunch of pictures and need to decrease them all to about 25 percent of the size (or all to 150x150 for AV size) With Resize!
all you have to do is direct it to your folder of scanned images, choose "independent resizing" and put in "25 percent." Now, Iyou are left with a folder of perfectly resized images.

Don't worry! Resize! doesn't overwrite the images in the folder; instead, it makes a folder of the almost the same name and places the edited files in that new folder.

Is it something the average PC user should download? I'm curious about the moodamp too. Looks pretty damn nifty. :0) I guess you could burn whole cd's categorized by mood? Wow.

I'd say yes - if you've got a lot of files - perhaps a lot of pictures - it will help you reduce clutter and free up hard drive space - I love it!!! And its very easy to use.

One suggestion though - for the most part instead of letting it auto select which files to delete, I've been going through the lists it generates and doing it manually - in some cases (Is with mp3s which I might have in different folders for different playback reasons) I might actually choose to keep more than one copy of a file.

The MoodAmp program doesn't let you burn. But I am finding it quite nice as I sit at the computer and let it generate playlists by my mood. Its a blast.

Thanks, Dill. I've just re-formatted my harddrive, so it's running smooth at the moment.

It'll clog up sooner or later, so I've bookmarked the thread.

Cheers!

Glad to help.

I'll update this thread as I come across anything else useful - and if anyone has anything that they think is really good - feel free to post it.
