Hi there. Here's a question for any experienced "Literotica" writer.
Is it possible to place a story in more than one catagory group?.
I've noticed some stories that could be described as 'crossover'. I've written one story for "Literotica" so far, "THE MOMENT MY LIFE CHANGED". As with most writers, I would like to give my story/ies the widest coverage possible on "Literotica".

Nope. You have one category choice, and that's it. You have to pick the dominant theme ( or the most squicky one ) as best you can.

If not then Laurel the site owner puts it where she thinks it fits best and sometimes she overrules the writer and puts it where she wants it.

You're limited to the one category, but you can use the tag lines to help you get some "crossover views"

For instance, say the story is predominantly BDSM, but there is some lesbian in it, you can put lesbian in a tag, same for group threesome, or any other "kink" it contains.

All of my stories are multi-chapter stories. I also tend to write more literary stories. You know: most 'erotic literature' really isn't. It's actually themed narratives: stories 'about' some sexual orientation or fetish or kink or practice (hence the categories here - and when you go to the sites of erotica publishers you find stories categorized as 'bondage stories', 'gay male stories', 'crossdressing stories', 'shapeshifting lesbian vampire stories', etc.

My stories aren't themed in that way. They are just stories about characters, and the stories don't soft-pedal, or euphemize the sexual interactions of the characters. The characters and the plot are the features, rather than some sexual theme.

Anyway, I still have a few stories here, although I've re-published most of my stories under another pen name (B. E. Thalia) on Smashwords.

But when I was publishing here I always submitted chapters as individual submissions, that way I could submit them in various categories depending on where the story was at that point.

I guess for most people who submit stories here their stories are themed to a particular sexual type of activity, but another way to handle it is to submit as multi-chapter and let the submission category reflect where that part of the story is.

OK, so I am working on a multi-chapter piece. Is it better to go cross category to pull in more viewers, or is it better to stay in category so any theoretical followers can more easily find the next chapter?

In general, I annotate the intro of each chapter with what's coming so readers have ample chance to avoid the stuff they might find offensive.

Depends on the subject matter. If its something like incest or Gay male that a lot of people get squickish with, best to leave it where it is.

So outside of the pick the most offensive category possible to avoid accidentally offending readers, there doesn't seem to be much other concern about crossing categories.

I know I'm over thinking it.

Like, in MC, my chapter sits on the list for days because there aren't many stories moving through, but less foot traffic. SciFi/Incest has like a one or two day window for visibility but a lot more reader traffic.

Or it seems to me that the SciFi readers like a little more story with their sex, as do Novella for that matter.

In any case, thanks for the reply. It seems consistent with the feedback from my V.E.

If readers like your story they'll find it, if no other way than by going to the submissions tab on your author/member profile.

As I mentioned above, my multi-chapter stories skipped all over the place in the way of categories, and readers who wanted to read the story would always look for it. One thing that helped was that I never began to submit/post a story before it was completed. I'd submit a chapter, wait until it posted to make sure it had posted correctly. Then I'd submit the next chapter, and so on right through the end of the story. So readers knew they could count on a new chapter every few days, and the fact that the latest was in a different category than the last really didn't make any difference.

Also, don't be concerned with offending people. It's incredible but absolutely anything you submit and post here will have people who will love it and those who will hate it, no matter how innocuous. You'll get messages and comments from flamers, although they almost always comment anonymously. I finally went into my profile and blocked anonymous comments to my stories. It cuts down on the number of comments, but by and large you're not missing any comments of any value.

This thread answered quite a few of my questions, but I have one that is off topic; When do I drop the next one in the series?

I don't drop the next one until the previous one has posted--so nothing gets screwed up if there was a problem with the previous one posting. Beyond that, I just suggest that you not take too long between segment postings so that you readers don't lose interest. With my series, I've submitted as soon as the previous one posted, so the interval is three or four days. An interval of a week should be fine too.

I also now tell the readers in a note on the first one how many segments there are and when I anticipate the final one will be posted.
