I work for a church organization during the day. I drive a delivery truck and work in their thrift store. A guy I work with wanted to buy a copy of Mr. Undesirable as a gift for his sister, so I brought it in, signed it and he set it down on a counter. A few minutes later the boss lady comes in, picks up the book and confiscates it. (Read: steals it.) She is talking to her superior about how to proceed, and I may end up losing my job. She is refusing to return it. The job pays shit, but I have good hours and insurance. Not to mention that it really pisses me off that she has stolen my book. I hadn't been paid for it yet, so she took it right from me, not him.

I might be going to war here. If this pans out the way I think it's going to I'm going to raise Hell like they've never seen. I've already contacted a lawyer, just in case.

That don't sound good. Lawyer sounds good. I presume Mr Undesirable doesn't drive the truck.

No, Mr. Undesirable stays in his place. :) I work professionally and courteously every day. This is all coming solely from the content of my book. The store itself sells books that are borderline pornography, and there is nothing that is in my book that isn't in one they are selling on their own shelves.

Boss lady doesn't like you? :(

Contacting a lawyer was a good move, you're most likely going to need one if you work for a church organization.

Give 'em hell Boota!

However, I think you are overlooking a real story here. I suspect that mild mannered 'boss lady' is in reality SuperCritic! She has the tights and cape hidden in her desk, ready for a pounce on any author she can find. What you need is a chunk of 'Critictonite!' It will nullify her super powers and you can defeat her easily.

Don'tchya just love hypocritical prudes ... ???

The boss hates everyone. Treats people like dirt. We work hard for horrible wages and still get treated like thieves. A lawyer, who is a friend and a fan of my book, is ready and waiting should he be needed. This is going to come down to a First Amendment issue. Why can they sell soft porn, but I'm fired over langauge in a book I was giving to someone else privately? Why can other people bring in different items and sell to the other employees on a regular basis, but I wouldn't be allowed to do the same? How can she "confiscate" my personal property when it is not illegal or outlawed by the company policy?

I don't just want to win. I want blood.

I don't blame you, I would, too.

Give 'em hell.

I'm guessing that there's a grey area around what you can or can't be fired for. Aim for battle, but prepare for loopholes. Hypocricy is not a virtue, but I don't think it's illegal.

But on the other hand...

Give 'em hell. Have you filed a complaint about the property she downright stole? That's just blatantly criminal under any circumstances.

They must die.

I'll bring the soap and legs of lamb, you bring the blanket to throw over them.

Sorry to be disgustingly optimistic, but it could well be the sign you've been looking for.

Calvin Greenlee, I hope?

You go man. It should be a ten year sentence for touching someone's copy of Mr Undesirable!

You get back to work........ You're wasting time even if it is for a good cause......

Boota, If she fires ya, file thieft charges on her ass first thing.... It'll give her something to think about other than her defense in the first amendment lawsuit.... also file a greavence with the stae emplyoment office where you live.... They like going after church groups because they know there are a lot of skeletons in the closets....

it also gives you a bargining chip or two....

Good move lawyering up.

Check my blog for today's entry about a teacher being fired for having done one porn movie back when she was homeless and trying to raise her two daughters. Eventually enlisted in the army, served as a military police officer, got out and went to school to become a teacher. Has won awards as a teacher.

So when it comes out that 11 years ago she was in ONE porn movie, she's fired and can't get another job.

I really hate it when people try to make you feel ashamed for doing things that are totally legal and not bad in ANY way.

I'm afraid I'm much more of an evil fuck when someone behaves in a completely unreasonable way towards me.

I'm with TxRad on this one - tell her she's more than welcome to take things further, but if she takes things further then so will you. Writing erotic fiction isn't against the law; theft is. Writing erotic isn't something you'll have to declare with every future job you apply to; theft is.

Tell her it's entirely up to her, but if she goes through with it you'll also have no option but to go public about the time she tried to put her hand inside your pants... Yes, it's bollocks - but if she's the prim and proper type, she'll do anything to avoid having her name dragged through the mud.

It's not even erotic fiction! It's a great, 'straight' novel that happens to have a lead character who enjoys swearing. If it was erotica, then I could kind of see why she'd justify it to herself. Ish.

Fucking hell!

Ok. Game plan two: let her make a complete and utter tit of herself by pursuing it. Find a friend who's willing to act as a journalist from a national newspaper, then have that friend pay her a visit, saying it's the craziest story they've heard in ages and they want it to be front page news

I have to politely disagree...

While emotional and unfortunate, there's a deep and important series of reasons why organizations that deal with either the public, generally, or children, specifically, have to be image concious. I support, and greatly, their right to be selective about things that distract or tarnish the job. I can see how a teacher, regardless the quality of her current work, can be entirely undermined by students and other faculty for a pornographic movie.

One of my local city councillors starred in a porn movie as a student. An opposing politician found a copy and circulated it around his party workers. Eventually a copy was sent to the local press.

The porn star/councillor said 'OK. I did it. So what?'

At the next election the votes for him increased.

His street-cred with the local yoof was immense. So apparently was his youthful equipment...

maybe someone needs to start a different thread on this but the woman in question, starred in many films and one film was being passed around the school by the football team or members there of... She wasn't fired, she was put on leave and her option to teach wasn't renewed.... This was either a junior high or highschool...

She has a large lawsuit against everyone involved.....

To be honest, that kind of forthright behaviour would probably make me vote for him too.
