I got an email today from a friend, saying that she might have sent me a virus that will wipe out a bunch of stuff (not terribly computer literate, sorry folks). Anyway, it's under the C drive, and it becomes active today (Which is why it is effective at eluding virus detectors). It's under the files and folders section if you go to start and then "find" or "search" - the name to search for is

sulfnbk.exe

If you have it, then let everyone you have sent email to know as well. I don't know how old it is, but I found it on my computer today after receiving the email. It hasn't messed with anything that I know of, but again, I am not terribly computer literate.
If this helps anybody, then I am glad.

hhhmmmm - did I need it? I deleted it! Thanks for letting me know Juspar.

Yup, hoax. I got an email from McAfee all about it. Ignore it.

BTW, hiya Juspar! Long time no see! How you liking North America? :)

just a hint...

the date a virus becomes effective doesn't influence whether or not it can be detected. Norton, and the others I imagine, use not only profiles of literally thousands of different viruse, worms, and trojans, but also fuzzy technology that can grab anything that looks or acts like a virus and halt it, asking you what to do with it.

I know everyone's heard it before...if you don't have registered, up-to-date virus software then you should. It won't do you much good to pirate a copy because you need up to date profiles. I do know that we run our system with full-time virus and firewall protection and encounter viruses at least three times a week from people sending email to infected web sites that send damaging script.

It's been the best money we ever spent on software.

It's part of the backup programs for backing up long filenames.

See the link above for info in restoring it.

Go to Cnet.com and search for firewal downloads. You should be able to find a free one there. If possible look for Black Ice. I don't know for sure if they have it there, but if they do it's one of the best. Another is Zone Alarm. I know that one is there. They should be free or trial versions that you can use for 30 days.

what a can of worms...

There are several free ones that you can download and which are, believe it or not, rated very well. One, in fact, is rated as more effective than Norton's Internet Security. I think the easiest way to direct you is to http://www.zdnet.com which is a central location for all sorts of downloadable software. Do a search on PC downloads for firewall. I don't remember the brands off the top of my head that are good, but most of them are rated.

Have fun.

I seem to recall...

...that the one from Zone Labs includes a virus program with periodic updates. I used it for a while, but wasn't too sure how good it was so went to something else.

I use ZoneAlarm and it works well..it's free for private
use. I don't know if norton and the rest of them have caught up with it yet as for as the best protection for a fire wall. I have heard that Blackice was good.

On the virus issue you can download norton antivirus for a free trial. I use it it works great. As with any antivirus program it must be updated.! The live update works great on it.

for more infromation on the sulfnbk virus. What is hoax and what is real see the link below; Also Lokergnome is a good way to keep up with what is going on and a good source for some cool programs and links ..hint 9x =windows 98.

Hoax Alert

According to the McAfee website http://www.mcafee.com/ this is a hoax, not a genuine virus threat. Check this info before deleting any files on your system which you may need in the future.
