I'm not Catholic so I don't really give a shit but the Pope does have a butt ton of influence so no matter what anyone thinks of the Church, what he says does matter.
So far he has said fuck the security, I wanna be with the people and that he can't judge gays and that women should have bigger roles.
I can respect that.

yeah, he's more up to date with things in general, plus he's sort of dropped that old pretense of past popes as being some sort of immaculate figures of i-don't-know-what-the-fuck, so that is a sentiment i also respect.

I think it's great that he's not marginalizing gays. It's also pretty cool that he's not big on security. What does a pope need security for anyway?

No, the Church is afraid they'll lose their Pope. The Popes themselves don't usually go out of their way to avoid anything. JPII did but that was after getting shot. Nobody wants to get shot twice no matter where they're going afterwards.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't the Church believe if they lose a pope, that's what God wanted? Or that God will protect the pope? If God won't protect the pope, what hope does anyone else have? That's the cool thing about this guy, he actually might believe what he's peddling.

That reminds me of the story of the drowning man.
He was stranded on a rock in the middle of a storm. He could see the water rising so he cried out to God. "God please save me."
Just then a man with a boat came by offering to save him but the man refused to go. He said he was waiting on God.
The waters got higher and higher so again he cried out to God. "God please save me."
Just then a woman on a boat came by offering to save him but the man refused to go. He said he was waiting on God.
The third time the water swept the man away and he died. When he got to heaven he said to God. "Why oh why didn't you save me?"

I agree with what KRC said.
But on a semi related note I visited Instruments of Torture exhibit at a museum this weekend. Each item had brief history and use blurb. It is amazing the most of them where invented by the Catholics. Many to use on women who cheated / disobeyed / talked too much.

I've always been interested in old tools of the trade. One has to wonder about the mind that came up with many of them.
That is to say, they were invented in Europe in a period when torture was commonplace and almost everyone was Catholic; not necessarily invented by Inquisitors.

There's no difference between this statement and thousands of years of Christian tradition. There's no difference between this statement and saying Christians can't judge axe murderers or car thieves. Completely taken out of the broader Christian context by the media to make it seem like it says something it doesn't.
