The party, led by Anneli Jaatteenmaki, narrowly beat the incumbent Social Democrats (SDP) of Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen.

The victory paves the way for Ms Jaatteenmaki to become the country's first female prime minister.

A woman, Tarja Halonen, already serves as president, after her election in 2000.

Like the Finnish were not a moody enough nation as it is! Ha, ha :p Does this mean that they will revive The Winter War with Russia once every month now?

Oh Frimost sweetie, no...
It didn't happen when we elected a woman for president,
at least no that I've noticed.
So I don't think it'll happen after this election either.
Thank you for your concern though, bless your heart :)

Are you sure about that? I read in an Airforce magazine a few days ago (Airforces Monthly) that a Russian Su-27 ‘Flanker’ air-superiority fighter jet violated Finnish airspace recently…this after a Russian Mi-8 ‘Hip’ Helicopter also flew into Finnish airspace…Maybe if she gives Putin a bj they will stop bothering you? :p

Naah, I highly doubt that.
But since you're so concerned,
maybe you could try doing that :p

Do what, receive a bj from your PM? Ok, sounds like a deal to me! Done and done…And I mean DONE. :)

I'm not sure if Lipponen will be so keen to do that. Maybe you should wait till after the new PM is chosen :)

I'm not sure how he'd take that.
If you didn't notice, Lipponen is very much a he...

Did you even bother to read the initial news-story that was the impetus for this thread????? Your PM is a chick now! She is a she, check the first post above.

Your reading comprehention isn't very good sweetie.
Lipponen is still the PM, as the new government hasn't been formed yet.
And Lipponen is very much a he.

Here's an article on the subject...

Social democrats: Centre now decides order of march

The Social democratic party (SDP), now fallen into second place in size among the parliamentary parties, admitted openly yesterday that in the coming negotiations on forming a new government the reins will be in the hands of the biggest party, the Centre, which was victorious in the general elections.

"The order of march in the talks on a government will be decided by the Centre. They have the ball. They are to make the decision on the direction to go - towards coalition with the social democrats or with the conservatives," said SDP secretary Eero Heinäluoma.

Prime minister and social democratic leader Paavo Lipponen was on Monday digesting the outcome of the election and said nothing about the talks. Heinäluoma also admitted openly that the SDP aims at a place in the new government.

Centrist leader Anneli Jäätteenmäki was extremely cautious in her comments about a government: "Everyone is in the talks. All options are open."

The executive body of her party will give consideration this Tuesday to the outcome of the elections and to talks on a government. At its party office on Monday it was thought the Centre would aim to get a coalition of election victors led by Jäätteenmäki.

In practice this would mean a government based on the Centre and the SDP - a "red soil" coalition. The two parties have a majority of 108 seats in the 200-seat unicameral parliament.

Heinäluoma said it was pointless at the time being to speculate whether Lipponen and Jäätteenmäki could be fit into one and the same government.

The Centre today appoints its three negotiators on the formation of a government, who under its rules are the persons who hold the party chair and two vice chairs and the secretaryship.

In the newly elected parliament the SDP has 53 seats as against 51 in the former parliament, the Centre 55 (48), the Conservative party 40 (46), the Left Alliance 19 (20), the Greens 14 (11), the Swedish folks party 9 (12), the Christian democrats 7 (10), the True Finns 3 (1) and others 1 (0).

On Finland Wheel of Fortune, when you buy a vowel you pretty much solve the whole puzzle huh?

Mikä siinä on että kaikki valittaa suomenkielen käyttävän aivan liikaa vokaaleja?
Minun mielestäni niitä on juuri sopivasti. (Yeah, a whole bunch of vowels in those sentences...)

Oh and Frimost, bless your heart, you're such an exceptional man.
Your command of the language and mastering of the situation has me in awe...

Ok, not really :p

But have a good day anyway.

Not as much in awe as when I pull down my pants…it’s bigger than the entire Scandinavian Peninsula!

OMG! You're right!
You must be in pain...you really ought to go see a doctor you know.
Aren't you in serious discomfort?
I mean a boil like that really should be taken care of by a professional.

Päivä, päivä Pixie!

Minä olen Kanadalainen-Suomalainen. <waving!>

My command of the Finnish language is shameful so I'll stop there!

Go Finn power!

I'm just a plain old 100% Finn :)

It's all those "extra" vowels, right?
Everyone always complains about those... :D

You just made a silly thought pop up...We had a series on TV, a sketch show...
One of the sketches they did was a gameshow thing.
A team always claimed to know the answer and they answered "Kanada" to every question.
Of course getting it wrong...And when the right answer would've been "Kanada"...

Anyways, nice to bump into you :)

Yes they do, no lack of manmeat around here.
They just don't make a habit of waving theirs about during every conversation.
But hey, whatever rocks your boat, sweetie.
