Polyurethane versus latex condoms

I've been reading about these newfangled polyurethane condoms...seems that they were originally marketed primarily to people allergic to latex, but more recent research shows that they are as effective at preventing the transmission of STDs as latex condoms. However, the condom industry doesn't want to confuse us poor, clueless consumers about the value of latex condoms, so they are not actively marketing polyurethane condoms to the general public. However, claims are that polyurethane condoms are:

1. Better at transferring heat and other sensations
2. Better-tasting than (unflavored) latex condoms

Anyone want to comment from direct experience or other knowledge?

The polyurethane condoms fit differently than latex condoms. While polyurethane condoms seem more delicate, I found that they are easier to put on because they don't stick quite as much as latex condoms. They can make a funny crinkly sound when you put them on or move your penis in a different way because they don't stretch quite the same way as latex condoms.

I've occasionally had trouble with latex condoms because they are not as puncture resistant as polyurethane. Although a latex condom will stretch like a balloon, you can break a latex condom with a fingernail. The polyurethene condoms don't stretch as much, either, so you may have trouble if your penis is unusually large or small.

The part about transferring heat is definitely true. Polyurethene condoms are definitely better at that.

Because they don't stretch as much, they tend to transmit other sensations more directly, as well--as long as they are tight enough.

You can't always find Avanti or other polyurethene condoms at your local convenience store or grocery store, but you can usually find them at a department store like Target, Walmart, or something like that. So I wouldn't call them difficult to find, but you may need to make a special trip.

Thanks. I've had no trouble finding them--there's usually a few boxes at almost any local drug store in my area--but I was curious about any 'real life' experiences after reading up on the topic at Condomania and the Durex site. Thanks all for the feedback.

PS--Anyone know anything about the effectiveness of polyurethane at preventing STD transmission?

I have tried the poly condoms several times........i have used them about 4 times and had two of them break.......never had a latex condom break.....i did like the feel better with the poly ones but the aftermath of a broken one has made me swear them off
