i've always been a bit surprised at how some threads just take off, while others, seemingly just as response-worthy, just die after a few responses.

that of course all prompts a question: what makes you respond to a thread? for that matter, what makes you not respond?

p.s.: as always, my answers later, yadda yadda yadda...

All sorts of things. Off the top of my head...

how much time I have

whether I think I have something to offer, that hasn't already been said

my interest in the topic

who the OP is (yes, I'll admit it)

if there's a response that strikes my fancy and #1 and #2 above apply

In this case, all of the above (except the last one) applied.

Yep, that's it for me as well.

I agree with what has been said so far. Do I have any useful to offer? Sometimes, I looks like some people have no clue, but make something up to respond.

In general, it is my impression that a person is much more likely to get a response if the original poster appears to be a female. I've seen this on forums with no sexual content.

In the HT forum, a certain percentage of guys seem to ask intimate questions addressed to women, and I can't help that it's really just for their sexual entertainment.

My spare time has been been in short supply for the last several months, so I've made very few postings lately.

This is mostly going to repeat what others have already said.

What makes me respond to a thread:
I feel that I have some sort of advice/input to offer.
I'm interested in the thread topic.
I know something about the thread topic.
I'm responding to/adding to something that someone else has said.
I don't have anything constructive to add, but I feel like delivering the snark.
It's a cock size thread. :D

What makes me not respond to a thread:
I don't see it because the thread starter is on Ignore.
I'm not interested in the thread starter or the subject matter of his or her thread.
I don't know enough about the thread topic to make a worthwhile contribution. (Not that it stops some people.)
Someone else has already made the response I would have given.
I can tell based on what's already been said that responding would be pointless.
I don't feel like delivering the snark.
The horse's corpse is unrecognizable.

What everyone else has said.
- Interest
- OP
- Mood
- Worthy contribution
- To piss somebody off (if the trout fits ... ;):D )
- How many adult beverages have been consumed ...:D:D

I post anytime I feel I have anything interesting to say. :D

Then you post WAY too often ... ;):D

I am quite similar to you Elian except I will read the title before deciding to read it. Even though the thread may be quite interesting if the title does not grab my attention then I do not read it. Usually for a title to grab my attention it has to indicate what is being covered in the tread and it has to show some thought was put into it. To highlight what I mean, a title that says Planning a threesome probably would not get my attention because it demonstrates that the thread probably did not have much thought put into it. Also it say to me that the thread is a run of the mill how in the heat of the moment their partner said they want a threesome or their partner got wet from the idea. Based on that experience that want to know how to arrange a threesome. However if said something such as, "Understanding the difference between fantasy and reality when discussing a threesome?" it might grab my attention because it demonstrates some thought was given to it. Plus it also tells me a bit about what is being discussed and shows some thought was given to the thread.

~ Interest.

~ Contributility. Yes, I know it's not a word, but now it is. If I don't have anything intelligent or insightful to add, then I don't.

~ Tone of the thread. If I feel like there's a hostile undertone, then I won't post. The rare time I'll butt in is when I know that a fact has been grossly misinterpreted.

~ It doesn't encroach on my personal space. There are a lot of threads which I feel I can contribute, but I don't because that means exposing myself to the public more than what I'm comfortable with.

~ OP. The more 'regulars' here brings up some very intriguing points of discussion in the HT; I often seek them out. If a regular starts the thread, then I will most certainly read it. I may or may not post, depending, but I will read it.
