POLL: Most Commercial U.S. Holidays...

Just curious, everyone bitches about how Valentine's Day was created by Hallmark in a secret plot to sell cards, chocolate, and teddy bears...

What other holidays do you feel have become way too commercialized, meaning they have lost their original purpose?

Christmas doesn't count because that is so obvious to anyone who has ever been in the U.S. or Europe.

It seems like every major U.S. holiday has become associated with a specific product or sale...fireworks, white sales, champaign, candy bunnies, flags, costumes, etc.

I have come to accept the commercialization of Christmas, it, like Halloween was a Christian religious holiday imposed over a pagan
one. Whatever.

On the other hand, easter is the high holy day in Christendom, & I'm at a loss to see what the things we do then have any purpose other than to fuel the economy.

It is true. Halmark bought Congress to get this passes as a holiday. A card buying holiday. Made to screw the male out of every dime he has been able to save since x-mas. (the thrust upon everyone holiday by our Chrisian brothers)

Just dont get me started!

Easter, like Halloween and Christmas and others were originally pagan festival days. It's from the pagan times that we get the symbolism of the bunnies, the colored eggs, and even the name (Eostre) of the holiday.

i have to go with valentine's day... its the one day of the year that pretty much everyone either really likes or really hates.. not to mention the masses of cards, flowers, candy, jewelry, and everything else that is marketed for it.

mother's and father's day i rather enjoy. it gives me a special day to pretty much tell my parents thanks for everything, despite them both being mostly hallmark holidays.. but there isnt really anything marketed besides the cards (i know there's stuff, but not nearly as much as the other holidays).

st. patty's day is more for the alcohol than anything (at least from what i've seen).. and new year's eve is in a sense celebrating the earth's age and that its another year older..

Easter, Christmas, and Halloween have already been covered, so i'm not going to say anything about those..

memorial day i dont generally hear too much about... except for parades and barbecues

independence day generally gets the fireworks and barbecues.. so it isnt so much marketed like the others are

Thanks. I didn't know that, and I know a lot of trivia about calenders & holidays. I always assumed it was just an attempt to tie it to passover with a different calender. Why not? I can't think of a church that doesn't use ceremonial candles, another pagan practice?

Again, thank you for pointing out what was so illogical it should have been obvious to me.

OK- so maybe the poll should have asked what's the 2nd most commercial holiday. As far as gross$, I understand it's Halloween,
with costumes, treats, decorations, & parties. But at least it has an ancient tradition, rather than being totally contrived.

I think all the holidays are over commercialized

It never fails to aggravate me when I see Halloween decorations and costumes in the stores in August ... Christmas stuff in September.
Easter stuff was put out with the Valentines as soon as the Christmas decorations were taken down.
Echhhhh ... makes me sick of the holiday way before we even get to it.

If you bothered to read the first post you would see I did not include Christmas because it is too obvious...but then people like you only read the headlines and ignore the stories.
