Liberals, and to a large extent so-called "moderates" and Big Government conservatives as well, are always looking for new sources of revenue to fund the government. It seems the government never has enough money.
Tax increases and new taxes are constantly being implemented, yet there's still never enough money to fund the government. Yet, there's one obvious source of revenue that is completely ignored. Its a source of revenue that was the primary way the federal government funded itself for much of our history. Its called TARIFFS.
Both Democrat and Republican administrations have rammed through disastrous "free" trade treaties over the past thirty years which have not only gutted our industrial sector and destroyed our economy, but have also deprived the government of a major source of income.
Its quite peculiar that this obvious source of revenue is completely ignored by both major parties as a potential way to help reduce the deficit.
