One of last night's topics concerned the use of US money to fight the drug war. Bill's belief was that the US is losing this war because the money is spent on trying to keep drugs from entering the country instead of decreasing the user base. Stop the demand first - you stop the supply.

However, countering him were comments that the money used for drug education has been misdirected and that US drug laws are racist.

Any thoughts?

Racist?

Yep...I think they are. Cocaine and crack...same thing except poor people (read a disproportinate number of minorities) who can only afford crack will get a much stiffer sentence than cocaine which is favored by the rich and famous.

You're fighting a war against something that predates the US by, oh I dunno, ten centuries? People like mind-altering substances whatever the culture. They want it. They'll get it. Doesn't matter what you do. Board up the US like a prison and they'll just find another market...they've been doing it centuries...China...South America...wherever it will grow they will grow it, cut it, process it, and sell it.

Me? Nope, never tried any of it including hooch. I don't get drunk either, but that's just my personal preference and not a moral thing.
