Political violence

Died in a gun free nation.

The best government ever does is fail to protect you from yourself.

I have a fairly good idea of what online sources and which groups poison American minds.

The universes only knows, what this mentally weakened man was reading, and listening to, that would lead him to construct a home made gun, and carry out a murder.

Thanks, Tories, for fucking up a health care system that would have prevented this misery.

Sympathies and condolences to her family.

First in her family to go to university. Involved with OXFAM, Save the Children and anti-slavery. Stood up for refugees and wanted greater military involvement in Syria. A Yorkshire lass.

A good woman, I am sure all will miss her.

your post

I am sure all sane people will agree with you . A good post

Whatever our political views, the killing of someone who was democratically chosen to represent her people is an atrocious act.

I can appreciate that this is a very sad time for her family and friends but it is a disaster for the wider community. Killing someone for trying to do her best to do a difficult task is heinous.

I see a fault in your logic there.

There is no 'good' in wanting to bomb Syria.

She didn't want to bomb Syria. She wanted NATO or the UN to have more involvement on the ground to enforce cease-fire agreements, to stop the killing and to protect civilians.

She was a good woman, passionate about defending democracy and bringing peace, and sufficiently aware that peace in Syria won't come from bombing. She was one of the best politicians, grounded in reality yet passionate about making people's lives safer and better. If only more of our politicians were like her - she was new as a Member of Parliament but had made such an impact that politicians on the other side of the chamber appreciated her and liked her.

She will be missed.

So, share with us how the Brit government protected her.

Politics 101: GOVERNMENT USUALLY FAILS AT PROTECTING US FROM OURSELVES AND ANYTHING ELSE.

The local Police, and the Police in London, were reviewing her security after a series of online threats against her. She had NO security provision at all, in common with almost all of the UK's Members of Parliament.

She, and other MPs, have weekly sessions in their constituency where any member of the public can walk in off the street to talk to their MP. Targetting her after one of those sessions was simple. It is part of UK democracy that anyone can speak to their Member of Parliament about anything.

Why Muslims rule London. Britain is a joke.

Wrong. We are a much more open society than the US. The killer was a local white man. The number of Members of Parliament killed in the last 100 years is small and most murders were by the IRA.

This. Political violence, either through assassination or otherwise, against the elected representatives of the people, is not just a crime against the victim, but against the constituents who voted her into office. It is a coup by murder, and I fear that it will get worse. It's always been with us as long as we have had republics and representative governments, but that makes it no less horrific.

Condolences to her, her family, her constituency, and the UK. :rose:

It seems likely that Jo Cox was killed because the killer had long standing mental health problems, not because he had a political point to make.

A good reminder that major mental health reforms need to be done in both US and UK, I think.

IMO, most if not all assassins and mass shooter/bombers have mental issue to some degree. The law says you must be able to differentiate between right and wrong. But your mental state could make it where you just don't give a shit about right or wrong.

How many of these types are failures in life? Or at failures in their own eyes. Depressed and suicidal yet still not wanting to kill yourself. So seek suicide by cop. Or claim some lame political/theological reason and seek some sort of infamy. Look at the Orlando guy, closet gay torn between that and his upbringing. He snapped and went murderous. Sandy Hook, nutter. Our Parliament shooter, loser.

This fellow is probably on the true nutter side.

It is not 'normal' to want to kill and murder. Some sort of deviancy from the norm is involved.

Not all abused children become abused but a percentage do become one. Not all subjected to scenes of domestic violence become wife beaters but a percentage do.

Can you raise a child to be racist? All the ardent racist I have met have ardent racist parents.

Then you have the cruel and selfish power seekers. Who are quite prepared to take some isolated illiterate goat herder's son and turn them into a devoted follower. Promising them the moon if they follow your orders.

Hell, there are still flat-earthers out there. Amazing what some people will believe.

Take a child and tell them they are useless and an ugly geek for years and years. How long before they start to believe it themselves, if only a tiny bit. Depression and low esteem and a good chance they become angry and take it out on the jocks and popular kids at school or hang themselves.

Hate and ignorance kill. Love and knowledge make things grow.

And yet, even a cursory reading of history reveals that political violence has been with us since the dawn of time.

Maybe. But the list of British Members of Parliament who have been killed since the beginning of the 19th Century is less than 10. Many more than that died on active service in both World Wars 1 and 2.

how many years have you spent in a mental hospital? you seem kind of mentally fucked, no offense but you have some issues.

Yes, in most democracies the numbers killed are rather small.

I tend to differentiate between political violence - violence that has at it's heart relatively sane people killing in the name of their cause - and violence directed at political persons because of their profile, but for more murky motivations, including mental illness.

Anarchists, Marxists, nationalists, Islamists, anti-monarchists/capitalists/abortionists/Imperialists/globalization.

Eventually we will get on top of latest round of killers. But others will spring up somewhere in the world. Who will they be?

We have eco-terrorists but how long before more and more become radicalized? They have my vote for the future world terror threat.

You can believe that if you wish. I doubt that she was that naive.

One thing I find interesting is the press coverage. If a witness claims to have heard the perpetrator yelling Allah el Akbar, the press are all over it screaming about Muslim terrorists. This guy was said to have been shouting Britain First (a, UK, far right organisation) and the press wait for the police to confirm any right wing influences and are keen to brand him as insane.
