(Political) Palin - GOP Downplaying her religious beliefs

I didn't get the impression this was being played down at all. The TV has been running interviews with groups of fundamentalists who absolutely salivate at her nomination.

(What I find quite amusing is some of our resident atheists saying she's the best thing since sliced bread--without seeming to realize she'd throw them all into the outer darkness if she could.)

Hey this is America...she's free to practice or not, any religion she wants too. As long as she doesn't try to force me to practice any religion I don't want too.

Ummm. Perhaps you don't quite understand what Pentacostals feel compelled to do.

Sorry but I've had plenty of dealings with Pentacostals and they've never bothered me one bit. They're even more polite than the Mormons I know.

Evangelism is a keystone of Pentacostalism. Politeness has nothing to do with it.

Her religion would be her private matter...

...except that I don't believe her when she says this:

Sarah Palin said:
"I won't hesitate to answer those questions about what my personal views are, but I am not one to be out there preaching and forcing my views on anyone else."

Then why did she try to force them on the public library and try to fire the librarian?

Why did she force them on her daughter? (I know, family. But she said "anyone else." That means anyone.) Is anyone here naive enough to really believe that she had a "choice?" In this environment? To even claim that she ever had a choice to make is ridiculous. Even McCain has said that if the subject of abortion came up with his daughter, it would be "a family decision."

I actually like that about John. It says that he may believe one way but he won't force that on his daughter... (never mind that John believed differently before he became the GOP candidate.)

Palin is lying when she makes that statement about not forcing her beliefs on others.

A wise man and good scriptwriter, Warren Lewis, once told me (while talking about movies) that no matter what a person says, their actions are true to their character.

Sarah Palin's actions say her statements are a lie.

The pot calling the kettle black of all things, now what was that witchdoctor's name in Chicago, that god damned America? Now let me see, here....ahm...

My father's side of the family is largely Pentecostal/Assembly of God, and I probably have between 50 and 60 close relatives that are still practicing. They are indeed evangelistic, but in dealing with them, it really depended upon the person. Some were always in my face, even when I was a very young child. Others were very laid back.

For Palin, you would probably need to look at her behavior as mayor and governor to determine whether or not she will allow her religious beliefs to affect her political policies. I look forward to her interview with Charlie Gibson, and of course, the debates.

Oh I understand. As I said, as long as they don't try to make this a church state, they can do whatever their little hearts desire. Freedom of religion also means Freedom from religion if I so desire to be free of those kind of encumbrances.

I do believe if God was forced down the American throats there would be a revolution. IMHO.

I would agree, but athiests suck at revolutions. Now, the fervent and religious? We do whole Crusades, man. We overturn the universe. If God were forced down the American throats? There'd be lots of blogging and angsty cable-access shows.

Heck yes. Jihad we all know about now but I'd like to point out that the history of Buddhism isn't all sweetness and light, either, and the riots by the fundy Hindus are nothing to snicker at. The only thing atheists have proven themselves good at is coups d'etat. 1917 wasn't a real revolution, after all.

Speaking of the troops in Iraq, Palin says on the video, ""Pray for our military men and women who are striving do to what is right. Also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for -- that there is a plan, and that plan is God's plan."

Thoughts?

I knew it'd turn out to he HIS fault

I'm so fed up with heathen Holy Wars and cursed Crusades, can't we just agree we don't like the bastards and kill them?

Who? Bush and Cheney? It's a thought, but it probably wouldn't be very polite. :D

I mean, sure, I give them credit for being able to pick their moment and swoop in... sure. No problem there.

But start with outrage and snowball it into righteous fury? And keep that going when it ceases to be novel?

Takes a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle more zealotry to maintain the zeal.

The Irish and British managed the zeal well enough, I'm sure most of the zealotry took place under ignorance of origin. Arabs and Jews... anyone and America - though really that latter is more out of frustration than true zeal ;)
