Polite to respond to comments?

Do you respond to reader comments when they leave their username? Do you think they expect you to? I'm of two minds. On the one hand, why would they want to hear from me? On the other hand, they bothered to leave a comment with their username, it seems impolite not to send a thank you.

I respond to e-mails. Public comments? Meh. I tend to barely notice that they exist. I'm very retro in my feedback tastes.

I'm with The Earl.
Unless the public comment requests a response.

Now where did I put that vodka? :p

I try to thank people for leaving a comment on my story.
They have taken the trouble to let me know what they think, after all.
Sometimes I miss it though, especially on an older story.

No rules, just what you feel like.

I respond to feedback - good and bad, but not typically to PCs, except a thank you note - to the good and bad - if they leave their addy .

If they leave a link in a public comment or an e-mail address in a private feedback I always reply.

Just the polite thing to do.

If they leave a name, i try to respond to all, even if it's nothing more than as quick thank you..... it's only polite.....

it sometimes leads to more in depth discussions and sometimes it's even about the story..... :p :D

PC's Yes if they leave and email or user name.

Feedback Yes good or bad unless the entire content of the feedback consists of "Gee, I'd sure like too..."

I respond to them all, and as quickly as possible. To me, the only difference between someone sending a nice note and posting a nice signed PC is that the latter is even more kind and generous, because they're not only telling you that you are praiseworthy, they are telling the world.

"Positive reinforcement" - what do we authors want? More "fan mail," more PCs. How do we get it? By rewarding those who give it to us. How do we reward them? By being gracious, which means acknowledging and thanking them for the time they have taken, and the compliment itself. If they say a little bit more I always try to "give back" by also saying something personal, but that is optional - the basic acknowledgement and thanks will do.

WWCD? This came up another time here, and I think she said she responded to them all. The memorial threads are filled with people who were delighted and touched to recieve responses from her. If the Master took the time to do so, how can we grasshoppers fail to do as much?

Thanks folks. I wasn't even thinking about feedback through e-mail. I still had the old literotica.org e-mail in there.

Oddly, Charley. I've never gotten any feed back while that AV's been up. I guess I'll have to see what I get.

Mean while, cmere :p :p :p

I tend to leave thank you PCs on my stories for those who leave Public commentary. Email feedback, if it comes with an address ALWAYS gets a thank you note, and an offer to be informed when I put anything new up.

I respond to every feedback. I've never had a public comment, I don't think.

I assume (from my own leaving of comments) that the commentator does not expect a response. But I will send one to them depending on the comment. If it's just "Great story" or "Love it" or "this sucks!" then I don't respond. But if the commentator took the time to leave a detailed response to the story about how moved they were, or how much they liked certain characters, themes, descriptions--or, for that matter, to constructively criticize, then, if I can send a response (i.e. they left a name), I most certainly will.

If it's email in particular, I'll respond, and I've started some good conversations that way.

If someone leaves me some feedback that I know well enough, and it was a surprise, I'll thank them.

I respond to all where possible...Although annonymous emails can be frustrating when I can't even remember what they're in responce to...lol

I wasn't always good at responding to feedback, but now I answer e-mails, send "Thank you" PM and IM messages, and RVC the stories of authors who have taken the time to read mine.

I try to respond to emailed feedback but sometimes real life gets in the way - after about a week or so I assume I'm too late.

PCs are a real problem. With my number of submissions the only way I know that I have been given a new PC on an old story is if I compare the 18 pages of an old printout with the current list, line by line and number by number. I don't do that very often so it can be a month or two before I notice.

I check recent postings about two or three times a week, more frequently when I have contest entries.

If I have missed responding to you, my apologies.
