Please stop calling it your vagina...

That would be very sad, I think those are good books for children/ young adults to read.

LIke I said; give 1000 students a choice between shake and JK. Let's see if shake stands the test of time as literary genuis. My $$ is on JK. Shake is lucky there was nothing to do back then except read; and we have been duped into thinking he was great; when he was not...babysitter can't argue that at all...

I'd choose Shakespeare, just sayin'. I've already read all the Potter books.

yes, I can... becuase you think when a person is born affects their talent

you cant see past the immediate moment

and you are sorely uneducated about history especially concerning the Elixabeathan period

and lets give those books to a 1000 college students.. those results would be very interesting

How can he not hack it today's world?

if he was born today , you're saying he wouldnt have the same gift that he would have because he was born then? that doesnt even make sense

when you are born doesnt make you anymore or less talented.. if he was born today he would be raised with our standards and would still have his gift... if anything if he was born today he would be even more popular

you're confusing financial success with genius... Leonardo Davinci died nearly broke... by your logic the Mona Lisa is worthless because he died poor

and those students.. are they high school student or college students... yeah, I bet you wouldnt like the results

you dont see alot of people buying Shake because you spend time with people who think 50 shades of twillight is genius.. and educated folks avoid you like the plague

I would not like the results?? I bet I would. Give every student a choice between the two... JK wins. FACT: Both shake and JK are available at just about every bookstore today. FACT: JK has outsold shakespeare the past decade. Both books are available. So how does a literary classic, such as shake, get beaten out by a fade?? How is this possible??

And it doesn't matter when he was born/ or if he is now dead. We HAVE HIS BOOKS!!! They are not CURRENTLY SELLING like JK and 50 shades. WHY IS THAT??

Maybe because there are more readers now that the entire human population during Shakepear's time?

Something you may have overlooked, Shakespear wrote plays for live performance, not novels. There is a huge difference.

It's not popularity that defines a classic, it's endurance. Shakespear was able to express parts of the human condition in such a way as to transcend language, culture and even the span of centuries. And in Elizabethian, the cleverness of the wordplay, with its humor and wit, continue to endure.

Rowlings created a fun fantasy series. It was and is very popular. Popularity does not equal greatness.
At best, Rowlings might be compared to J.R.R.Tolkein. At worst, Rowlings is more comparable to Danielle Steele or V.C. Andrews.
In terms you may understand better; The Spice Girls sold more records than the Beatles, yet there are a lot more kids who know about the Beatles than ever heard of the Spice Girls.

Agree. Except comparing Rowlings to J.R.R. Tolkein.

Read post 155. Both books are available. Yet one is selling better. Two choices. 1 winner.

Ooooh, 'Killing' a man whose been dead 500 years. That's quite the achievement.
Go on, get all rabid about how 'great' Rowlings is. You're vehemence is so cute.

In 20 years Shakespear will still be great literature and Rawlings will have been largely forgotten.
People will still be performing Shakespears plays to enthusiastic audiences, and Harry Potter movies will be the crap kids are forced to watch with their parents and grandparents.

Tolkein was a far more able writer and a superb linguist.

Hey, Big Macs and tofu burgers are both available. I guess that means Big Macs must be the best fucking food on the planet because they've sold TRILLIONS!

You missed the point; as did babysitter. 'Greatness' is subjective; but $$ talks. I could care less about JK. My point was that Shake did not stand the test of time; as his work is still here...yet not many have an interest. Like Pepsi and Coke. People have a choice to buy Shake or JK. And...the consumer has spoken.

As a side note; I was in line at the book store when the last Harry Potter book came out. Hundreds of people were in line. When the doors opened; everyone ran for Shakespeare!! I was shocked. Nobody bought JK! Still shocked to this day!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!! Give it up queer.

You've misspelled his name every time you've used it.

So money = greatness?
Guess that means Donald Trump is a much greater indiviual than say, Ghandi.

Hey, I thought you were leaving Lit, or at least the GB. Any plans on following through with that, or are you just too sad?

Comparing Trump to Ghandi is talking about the 'character' of an individual. I never questioned Shakes character. I stated that he was considered good because there were no TV's, or IPODS back then.

In todays world, his work still exists. It does not sell as well. Thus proving; people read his shit to stay occupied. it's a level playing field sonny boy. We have shake. We have JK. Both are available. Students are familar with Shake; as they must study his crap. Yet, when taken to a book store; JK wins. How can a 'classic' get beaten by a fad? How, because he never was that good; and nobody wants to read his shit. If they did; he would be selling better...

People call him 'great?' Yet nobody ever says how much fun he is to read!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!

Da' Bus is here!

You're either on the bus or off.

Just stand by the door while we cross the train track.

I guess that goes to the quality of people with whom one associates. I know plenty who consider Shakespeare fun to read.

Mozart was outsold by Bill Haley and the Comets.
Classics get outsold all the time. Again, it's the endurance that defines what a classic is, not popularity.

JK Rowling wrote for children

JRR Tolkein wrote for adults

Both created worlds

Tolkein takes more imagination and higher intellect to "get it"

Neither are nor ever will be taught in American high school English; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets won't replace MacBeth

Comparing Rowling to Tolkien is like comparing a sandcastle to the Great Mosque of Djenné. The only thing they have in common is their first initial.
