Have you ever looked back over one of your old stories and been pleasantly surprised by how good it was? I've been getting good feedback about the 10 commandments ever since I wrote it back in October, but I haven't actually read it since I posted it. Just read it over now and it's really is as good as the nice people who e-mail me say it is.

God dammit, I'm good :D.

Hell no. Every time I do that, I'm embarrassed at how bad it is and would like to have it removed. I solve the problem by not doing it anymore. Damn, I'm mediocre. I used to be a lot worse.

I read your post about thirty seconds ago and I didn't like it that much, but when I came back to it, all fresh-like, it suddenly seemed pretty good.

:D

I've had both experiences, actually. I've gone back to read a story and been pleasantly surprised, as you say; and I've also gone back to read a story that I thought was really good, and upon re-reading it I was unpleasantly disappointed. The first kind is better.

My problem ...............

Before I started writing and submitting stuff here, I think I read about three stories to see how it was done and picked bad ones. I didn't have a clue; just dove in as if I knew what I was doing. Big mistake.

I had never written ANYTHING for anyone to read except an English teacher. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably never have submitted anything. The world would probably be a better place for it, too.

Illiterately,

Bollocks MG. Your stories are something which I'd love to have in my repetoire. Don't be so self-deprecating.

I try not to look back - I tend to get depressed. I try not to look forwards either, that's depressing as well. I keep my eyes closed and happily trip over stuff. (Dammit, that doesn't work either, does it?)

I like to pay attention to where I am and try to make the most of it. I may subsequently pretend success.

ehm excuse me please, but...

i found a partly written story on my computer a couple of weeks ago. it's about a junk arriving on the shoreline with piles of people who are then lead into caves...

it's so damn good i can't have written it. anybody got any ideas where it came from?

i have such a lousy memory. i should put my name on the page before i begin writing it and then i wouldn't have this problem.

ps my computer seems half full of partly written stories... i can't think when the heck i had time to do them.

This is probably the work of small software pixies who have evolved to live in PCs. They come out at night and play with the software. Microsoft deny the existance of these creatures, although there are rumours that they are actually on the payroll.

Hope that helps.

That's a good feeling, isn't it? I just started posting stories last week, and it never occurred to me anyone else would even like the stuff I wrote. I haven't gotten much feedback, but even the negative stuff has inspired me to write more. Where would I find your story, btw?

Click where it says "like my stories, in a nutshell" or there.

I thought it was TheEarl's scrotum that was in the nutshell. Geez, do you mean I could have checked his stories out with that link???

GL wow! I have a feeling you've hit the jackpot there dear. Payrolled Pixies. Damn, I think there's a story in that. grrr

Yeah, my link is carefully disguised by the header of 'My stories:' Gaah, some people :D.

you know you have a serious problem if you thought i was serious.

eh.

get offline and get writing!

;)

I have done both over the years, sometimes I look back and think "how on earth did I write something that good?" and also "my God, that is terrible, what ever made me think I could be a writer?". The strange thing is that I get that about the SAME item in question, depending on what mood I'm in. I notice it a lot more with my music too - sometimes I really like my songs, other times I think they're terrible.

I read a very intelligent text some time ago:

"It used to be now,
but more damned was it unfortnuately
- but this bloody worse
it never has been bad!"

The author had a point there.
