Right now for my current WIP, I've got the following queued in Winamp as background/inspirational music (in no particular order):

"Coitus Musicalia" from The Red Violin

"Dress Waltz" from Legend

"John Nineteen Forty-One" from Jesus Christ Superstar

"Cockeye's Song" from Once Upon A Time in America (Morricone featuring Zamfir)

Main theme song from The Lover (Gabriel Yared)

"Tango Negro" from Red Shoe Diaries (the series)

Orchestral theme from Metal Gear Solid 2

Main theme song from Basic Instinct (Jerry Goldsmith)

Main theme song from Mission Impossible

Love theme from Flashdance (Giorgio Moroder)

Theme from Romeo & Juliet (Nino Rota)

"Owari Soshite Hajimari" from Tenchi Muyo In Love 2 (Saitou Tsuneyoshi)

"Vocalise," the theme from The Ninth Gate (Wojciech Kilar)

"A Lullaby for Cain" from The Talented Mr. Ripley

You are a truly fascinating woman. That is an excellent playlist. Mine would be a mixture of piano concertos (I'm very partial to Liszt and Rachmaninoff) and aggressive neo-classical guitar stuff (Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Jason Becker, & Marty Friedman). Very few people like what I like, but I find that music utterly relaxing. I used to use it to meditate to (although I know I'm probably the only one on the planet) when I was upset. The individual songs aren't that important, I usually listen to the whole CDs.

Great songs. I have listened to and liked all of those.

Thanks. ;)

I forgot to ask earlier what everyone listens to in general when they're in the process of writing.

The playlist that I mentioned above is only one of several that I have saved or put together on the spur of the moment depending on my mood and that of the story that I'm working on. My current story is a mixture of romance, action and tragedy, so I like to have music in the background that reflects the emotions that I'm trying to convey through my words. :)

Thanks, Dran. :)

Right now I'm shuffling through the Dracula soundtrack. I just love Kilar. ;)

I'm on a bit of a Vangelis kick at the moment, currently playing 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Alexander OST's, and half-inching Mythodea and Odessy from my mother in a moment to iTune it :)

Nice. I think I've heard of Keiko Matsui, but I've never had the pleasure of hearing any of her stuff.

Heh, I'm not writing, my muse has been gone for.. a long time *sigh*. I'm just killing things on World of Warcraft.

Oh, and, 1492 for some odd reason helps me sleep... I have it on loop at night

I usually have silence when I'm writing, though sometimes I may put the TV or a good movie on. Rarely does music come in, it often distracts me from writing as the songs end and change. The only exception is when music just seems to fit a scene or seem necessary to listen to. Then it enhances the story, and I use it. Whatever fits my current mood and seems good makes its way in.

My tastes are eclectic, but tend toward the classics and the good stuff- mostly rock, blues, and instrumental. I always try to put this stuff on when I must listen to music. On occasion I am even so inspired by a tune I insert it directly into my work in an appropriate scene (example: the Toyota commercial music from the car chase in "Fear, Lust, and Vanity"). And of course if one of the people I'm basing a character on likes a certain tune or performer, I will research the artist and play their work, then think about what they're trying to evoke in it. It helps me get to better know the themes and characters I wish to put across.

My play list goes from one extreme to the other.

At the soft end I have Air Supply.

At the folk end I have John Denver.

There's also some bluegrass mixed in.

At the hard end is Tool and Metallica.

It really confuses people when I just put it on random play. It can go from Annies song straight into 46 and 2. :D
