How many times have I heard the term, Pinko without really knowing what it meant? I finally decided to look it up.

Here's what dictionary dot com has to say about it:

A person who holds moderately leftist political views; a pink.

In which case it's either "Yeah!!! I'm a pinko!!!" Or "I'm far to left to be a pinko!!!

Here's the next one:

emotionally charged terms used to refer to extreme radicals or revolutionaries.

Now, I just *wish* someone would call me a pinko! I would consider it an honor!

The origin of the word comes out of the Russian civil war. In that war it was the reds (bolshevicks) vs. the Whites (monarchists, social democrats, and nationalists). Thus, the communists became known as the reds. The word was mostly derisive and was commonly used a lot during the later part of World war II and afterwards.

During the red scare, fueld by Joseph Mcarthy, he found very few true communists lurking about. There were plenty of socialists and radical liberals around though. They weren't quite red, but they were close enough for his purposes, so they became pink. I have seen it argued that pink was chosen as well to show them as less manly than your average joe.

Basically, anyone with strong leftist leanings but who dosen't endorse marxist/leninist/Maoist communissum is a pinko.

The word is rather like a term of non-endearment in that it comes from the fact that the Soviet Union and most 'official' communists were associated with the color red. Russia (and China) reveres red, it's in their history (and flags, though not in the current one for Russia). "Red Square" in Moscow actually refers to a 'beautiful' square, as the same word in Russian means red or beautiful (krassnii); Red Square is not red. So, from red to to "commie pinko".

The red and blue state thing made me laugh first time I heard it cos I so associate red w/the Left. It's hard to believe the association is so far in the past for many. P.

Didn't have my dic. here so went online. Severnyi polyus seems to mean North Pole, but the Soviets named various polar explorations, then later space explorations using these words.
