Admittedly, I haven't read through the thread because I have to go to school soon, so I can only really read through bite-sized chunks first thing in the morning. But, anyhoo, here's my 2 centavos:

A tat is permanent. Technically, you could have it removed, but that takes both a lot of time and a whole lot of money. If you decide, one day, that you don't like it, you can't just get rid of it. Also, you can get it in a place that is easy to hide -- true enough -- but, you can't literally make it disappear whenever it's convenient for you or you're sick of looking at it.

A piercing, on the other hand, is not permanent. You can cease wearing the jewelry for an extended period of time and the hole will close. For free. :) Also, you can make your piercing appear to disappear at any time simply by not wearing the jewelry and using a touch of concealer. This isn't true for the first [insert amount of weeks it takes for a nose piercing to heal], but after that, it's gravy.

My vote? Piercing. Definitely.

Thank You Everyone  's

I'll be going with the piercing. The tat still sounds good but I will wait on that until I'm sure and know exactly what I want.

You guys are the best!

Have been told for five years no one will do my tattoo, regardless of how many people say "Oh. my guy/girl/thing will." Apparently, they have issues with tattooing directly on hipbones due to a risk of infection and/or damage to A) their needles and B) my bones.

I've ALWAYS wanted a tat, just one little problem. Well two, actually. I have the lowest physical pain threshold in the world, and have heard way too many stories of how much it hurt, and two.....I have a thing about needles. Hate them. *shudder*.

Always wanted a celtic knot design in black around my wrist, instead of wearing a bracelet. Eldest son has many tat's including incredible Celtic designs around his upper arm. When I mentioned wrist, he went ballistic, telling me 'no, no, no', it will hurt like hell, there's not enough fat around the wrist. *sigh*.

As for piercings? *double shudder*......needles and pain - direct correlation. No way Jose, not this side of hell. *wistful sigh*, but I would so like the single piercing in my left ear. Maybe one day. :(

Heh. Did my ears myself -- just a needle & some rubbing alcohol. Shoved it right through -- five times! Amazing how loud the snap, crackle, pop of tissue is that close to one's ear drum. ;)

I have triple piercings in each ear, each with a meaning and gotten at a different times. All were done with the "gun" at a salon. My mom tried to get a friend of hers to pierce my ears at home, with the ice and the huge needle -- that worked for ONE ear, and I wouldn't let her near me for the other (I was 9 or so). The gun didn't even hurt (I was 12), just made my ears feel really warm. The higher up the ear I went, the more uncomfortable the piercing was, but none of them ever HURT.

However, tattoos....not so sure. In part, it's because I scar REALLY easily and I don't heal from skin wounds well. I have a cat scratch on one knee, was just a little tear, not serious at all, but it looks like a freaking surgery scar. But if I ever decide to get a tattoo, I have to get it from a friend of mine now living in Greece :) We made a deal on it, and I figure, if I can get my ass to Greece, I can get him to tattoo me.

It says Stegral, midear, and I've been reading the Celtic/Witch's runes since I was about thirteen. How else would I have kept my mother from reading my journals and attempts at juvenile porn?

I could never get my nose pierced. I have a chronical flu that makes my nose drip 365 days/year.

I have a tat and it was painless despite the sensitive area, perhaps the sensations were even erotic in a way. I wanted to get my nose pierced about .... 16 years ago? (Shit, where did time fly?) But saw a friend of mine get an infection and it was not a pretty sight. Also, dare I ask what one does when they blow their nose, not to mention the pussing hole left when one removes it? Well, these are things that made me decide TAT!

I've got my nipples pierced and two tattoos. I like them all but the tattoos are much better at personal expression, imo. Yeah, they're permanent but so is a scar in your nose.
*shrug*
Good luck with the decision.

Aww...I'm sorries. But I can understand their fear.
Keep an eye/ear out and maybe you'll be able to find someone to do it for u.

LOLOLOL

I have one tat now and am looking at getting another soon. (First is a black Panther on right shoulder/Deltoid. Second will be the Kanji Characters for Honor on left chest. Others in the works are a Mermaid with my wifes name along the tail on my left shoulder.)

My wife had her belly button pierced but it was too shallow so it grew out. She plans on having it redone as soon as it heals completely. Others in the works are nipple piercings and a Swallow Tailed Butterfly on the back of her shoulder.

Oh and I fell asleep during my tat.

I actually don't like pain either or needles. But I'm used to needles by now....I was such a sickly child that I used to have my blood drawn every month or so.

Your son is right, the wrist will be painful. One of my good friends had me design a sanskrit tat for her which she has on both her wrists and they hurt when she had then done.

Right now I have double piercing on my ears. One I always have something on the other only at time...its location causes it to catch in my hair all the time.

Lemme know if you get your left ear pierced? :rose:

I can see why.
I wanted to get it done this week but my flu from last week has made it into this week and I still feel like crap. This means no piercing for a while.

Did you design your own tat? I like the idea of the mermaid with Mrs Cat's name

I really want to but right now I can only afford one. So, I'm thinking go with the piercing first then save up some money and get a tat. That would give me time to get my tat designed. I want something original and tribal....just not sure what yet.

Yeah, you pointed out some of my fears. I asked around and the general info that I got is that if I clean and take care of the piercing(and don't have a cold when I get it) then it should heal just fine. Once it is healed a cold shouldn't be a problem...or so they say.

Thanks for bring this up. I'll do a bit more digging before going through :rose:

I actually want both. Just gonna start out with one. I need to design my tat first and I also don't have enough money for both at the moment. Thinking the piercing then the tat.

Well my tolerence to pain is rather high, but I didn't find it painfull.
The Panther was a generic design.
The Kanji is from something my wife gave me at Christmas. The Mermaid will be one of several designs friends of mine are drawing up. (The guy I am going to have do the tats is an artist in his own right so I know he'll do it justice.)

As so many here have said, a tat is forever. A piercing can be allowed to heal closed.

Okay, another question.....

How should I choose who to get the piercing/tat from?
I don't really know any tat artists but I have heard good things about this one place in town.

Thanks. :rose:
