Hi all hope somebody can help me out here
I usually post pics on the am boards of me and my lady
usually at 640x480 and they have always been fine before , but for some reason when I tried to post my latest pics it kept telling me the files were too big
after I had cropped one of the pics it was 465x384 but still too big , hope someone can work this out for me
many thanks in advance :D

Don't know what the prob is...you can usually post 800x600. Maybe it's just Lit tonight.

When the bbs complains about the file being too big, they aren't referring to the size in pixels. They mean the file size in bytes.

Now depending on what the camera was that took the photos, you could be dealing with very large photos indeed.

A megapixel camera (one of the newer types) will routinely produce larger than acceptable images. So you'll need a photo editing program of some sort that is capable of optimizing the images. For example I use Photoshop, but thats a very expensive program. You might look at paint shop pro, that program is capable of optimizing your images. You could also try reducing the number of colors being used as a means of reducing the overall file size as well.

I have used the same digital camera for over a year now and it hasn't happened before
I use adobe photoshop6and my digicam is 1.3megapixels

Hmm maybe you're saving in the wrong format? Or maybe the board is just being wierd like someone already said. Try again tommorrow.

Or, you have become victim to a virus that is hijacking your .jpg files as an infection launch. Many viruses attach themselves inside a graphics file then extend the size of the file to contain the rest of the virus.

Make sure you have the latest dat files for your anti-virus program. If you do, try going to the anti-virus on-line sites and run any 'from the web' scanners they offer - often these have the yet to be released virus killers and can clean your C: drive - they won't check other drives though.

Cool, photoshop is perfect for what you need to do.

First, if the image is too large, ie 1280x1024 you want to resize it. So run the blur filter, then resize it say down to 800x600 or 640x480. The save for web, set the optimization down around 80% or so and check the file size it will generate. That number will only be off by a little from the actual file size used by windows. Maximum file size is 102K, so you need to keep it below that mark.

JPG's make for a poor virus launcher since a virus would have no way of knowing what application will open the image. However if the saved file size does differ significantly from what photoshop says it should be, I suppose its possible you have something attaching to the file that might be a virus attachment. It wouldn't hurt to run a scan with the latest Virus db installed.
