Pick A Ripe Watermelon

I raise watermelons. I've tried every way there is to judge the ripeness of a melon, and there's only one way that's right almost all the time: BY THE COLOR OF THE MELON BOTTOM.

THE DEEPER THE SHADE OF YELLOW, THE MORE LIKELY IT IS THAT THE MELONS RIPE. MUSTARD YELLOW (Frenchs Brand) IS THE OPTIMAL COLOR. STREAKS OF BROWN IN THE YELLOW MEANS ITS AT ITS PEAK AND WILL SOON ROT.

THUMPING AND WEIGHT WILL LEAD YOU ASTRAY. LOOK FOR THE BRIGHT YELLOW.

This is ridiculous. When are we going to judge the ripeness of a watermelon by the content of its character rather than the color of the melon bottom.

Youre right, of course. No more talk of optimal color, every watermelon deserves an equal opportunity. Regardless of color or size or shape or number of seeds!
 
do your watermelons spread their seeds after eating ?? go forth and spread thy seed young melon..
 
I always get tempted to eat my seeds, but after I'm finished, I sort of lose the desire.
 
I do the responsible thing and grow seedless melons.
 
Hmm, I always thought knocking on them and listening for wetness in the echo was the best way to tell ripeness.

I thought so, too. And its tough to judge maturity on the vine. There are as many schemes to judge ripeness as there are melon growers. But a bright yellow bottom with hints of brown marbling (decay) is consistently reliable.
