This is the charming story, so recently offered in a new translation by Adamaeus Selkirk, of the ravishing young courtesan Phryne of Antioch and her roguish paramour Meander of Myletos.
Doctor Selkirk has not expunged the shockingly erotic matter of the tale whos Victorian 'sanitation' had left earlier translations so lifeless and insipid.
"I feel that the modern public deserves the entire and complete story as put down by the anonymous author over 2300 years ago. One must be forewarned however that the work was written to appeal to the sensual and jaded tastes of decadent Hellenism and accept it as a part of the 'genre erotique' so popular at the time."
And so forthwith we give you the unexpurgated version of the romance. Set in the seething cosmopolitan world inherited by Alexander's successors we follow the adventures of these captivating lovers from the Pillars of Hercules to the Mountains of Sind.
But the fable begins more prosaicly on a moonlit night in a grove of ancient olive trees somewhere outside the city of Priene, nestled in the soft hills of western most Anatolia...
