Can anyone tell me if it is possible to remove a black square that is hiding a face in a photo. I understand it is possible to do with Gimp. This isn't a professional photo and there is no copyright involved.

Would appreciate any help,
Thanx

It's only possible if the photo is in a format that saves layers, and if that black square is on one of those layers.

The odds of that are pretty slim if you got it anywhere on the internet. Maybe if you copied it off a computer yourself... But that's still doubtful. Once saved in another format or the layers are merged, the pixels under that black square are gone forever.

My daughter is in design and this came up once. She said it can be done, but requires certain software and even then as Dark said it would have to layered by software.

My question would be to question your motives.

Do you think someone close to you is posting dirty pics and you want to see their face?

Or do you like to go to amateur porn sites and strip the anonymity away from the posters?

Sorry, it is just a question that raises those types of questions.

The pic was emailed to me so I think they added the black square to hide their face, aside from that I don't kmow.

Was that a whoops, logging in with a different account?
There maybe no copyright involved but what about respecting privacy? Mind you if you don't really know them at all you could always cut and paste another face on top - perhaps Sarah Palin?
Here is a thought - if you don't know what they really look like then how do you even know the pic really belongs to the sender? Could be a big hairy bloke - you know - with a really nice leer.
Have you tried turning your laptop over to see the back of their head?

don't bother. they all look the same from the back.. with that big apple on their heads

Why are you answering for Shalam-ba-lam?

I'm sure your answer will only improve the veracity of the OP.

Edited to add that I don't believe any of this guy's photos were of the professional variety or copyrighted either.
He would probably be interested in the answers you seek...
