I've been posting stories here for a couple of months. Although, by nature, I'm quite competetive, I soon realised that I wasn't going to win any prizes, but my stories are well read, and my 'average' is 4.5, so I must be doing something right.
Anyway! I posted two new stories last week, 'Kinky Boots' and 'Re-Paying a Debt'. When I checked earlier today, one has 3 views and 7 votes, and the other 0 views but 4 votes!
Can someone explain, please?

<chuckling> KM, you're getting real concise with answering this question. No doubt it's the practice, eh?

Oh, and congrats and welcom, Mag.

A "Welcome Wagon" Kit for New Authors?

The number of posts from beginning authors about how vote and read counts work and the related details about the timing of updates to the system, how long it takes stories to go "live", what the "H" and "E" letters mean and how you get them and why, etc. continues at a steady rate.

Most new authors (me, too, once upon a time) did not grasp how things worked, and the available question-answering resources on the bulletin boards.

My humble suggestion to the Board of Directors is to synthesize a reader's digest version of a Welcome Kit for first story/poem posters and send it to them as an email after their first contribution is accepted.

I predict that more than half of the "how does the site work" questions would vanish, as a result.

Most of what you need to know as a beginning author can probably be distilled down into 6-10 paragraphs (short ones), too.

Some learn by lurking, while others learn by asking questions.

Thanks, for the prompt reply. I agree with Singularity, the rules and guidelines are a bit 'longwinded',so I haven't actually read them!
When I thought that I could win a prize (self-dellusion), I got upset when I found out that I was posting at the end of the month, which could have a detrimantal effect on my scores. I've come to terms with this now, but perhaps someone could have another look at the 'tips for authers', and condense them into a more 'readable' size.

I love the site, and will keep posting.
