Yeah I thought the ending sucked too. But, I will admit that it left it wide open for a sequel... which I have no doubt we will be seeing in a year or so.

As for Peter walking off on MJ, I assume you are not a comic reader? Although the movie did not always stick to the story already created, I have I feeling it will in this case.

Yeah.. but it took them awhile.
The ending was pretty concurrent with the books, a big part of the classic Spiderman is the alienation that the powers give him.

You don't remember the famous "you just got lucky tiger..." line from MJ? She always had a thing for Peter...he put her off for years before he finally 'let her in'.
The problem with the movie is you have a hacked up plot with MJ being dropped into a story about Gwen Stacy, the gal who died on that bridge. Peter resisted MJ forever thinking she would meet the same kind of fate (which ironically she did, sorta)....a fact that didn't quiite come through with the attack on Aunt May being a loose equivalent.
I really adored the movie....as a long time spidey fan I waited for ever and ever to see a real spidey movie actually come to life.

I heard the same for the sequels. The ending made sense to me,
he lost uncle Ben, Aunt May was attacked becuase he was Spiderman, M.J was almost killed because of it too. The only way to protect them was to distant himself. But they made it at the end where it looked like M.J. had guessed that he was spiderman, by her reaction to the kiss, as he was walking away.
