Pet me, please

Great thread, Pet. I love looking at photos of other peoples pets. Here's a pic of my, sadly departed friends, - left to right - Ricky, Tibbs and Ben.

They all got on really well together but Tibbs was the boss of the three. He's come into the room and head straight for his cushion letting nothing get in his way. If Ricky (he was a big-un) was spread out, asleep across the middle of the room, Tibbs would literally walk over him to get where he wanted. Ricky would often wake to find Tibbs walking over his back. He'd just lie there, scared stiff, moving only his eyes ...very slowly.

Ben was always very excited to see anyone come in (including Tibbs) and would jump around wagging his tail and sneezing all over the place. Tibbs would sometimes misunderstand his joy and take a half-hearted swipes at the poor fella's nose.

Ricky was a huge softy (I think that shows in this pic). He'd never take notice of other dogs when we were out walking. People would be quite amused to see such a big dog calmly walk past other dogs that were going nuts and barking at him. He'd very rarely even lift his head to look at them. All he was interested in was sniffing the next tree up ahead.

What's this about raining cats and dogs?

My dogs loathe going out in the rain, or getting their little tootsies wet. I have to watch them carefully to prevent unexpected presents before the hoildays.

Where does this expression come from?

AnimalPlanet says:

Raining Cats and Dogs
Definition: Heavy rain.

Origin
So many pig players wrote that this phrase originated in the Middle Ages when cats and dogs slept on thatched roofs of cottages and fell onto unsuspecting sleeping occupants during heavy downpours, that I started to wonder if this was the case. Although I did not run across this explanation, there seems to be a number of theories. One theory claims that the sound of thunder during a heavy rain was reminiscent of the cacophony created by fighting cats and dogs. Another suggests that this expression can be traced all the way back to ancient mythology when cats symbolized rain and dogs represented wind. The one I like best, however, blames the origin on the bubonic plague of the 14th century. It seems not only people were afflicted with this horrific disease, but cats and dogs as well. During heavy rainfalls the remains of hundreds of cats and dogs would be washed out into the streets.

I'm sure they would've been, Ricoh. That's quite a similarity there...I don't suppose you have a black and white cat do you?:D

Pet: I think I remember a discussion on the origin of 'Raining Cats and Dogs' on the radio some time ago, where everyone agreed that it came from the plague theory.
I guess one would have to be as 'Mad as a Hatter' to have been as 'Happy as Larry' to have lived in those times. ...Never in a 'Month of Sundays', eh.:D

My lil critter was saved from drowning along with his 3 siblings. When I went to select from the litter, he chose us by climbing up my bf's leg. We knew he was ours.

He disappeared during the winter one year, after a bad storm. I spent every other day at the Humane Society looking for him and the workers came to know me by name. For a month I did this and I thought my baby was gone. While making dinner one night, I heard a voice calling .... I opened my front door and my baby was home, a little thinner and his voice was different, but it was him.

He used to love running outside and taunting the neighbourhood dogs. One particular house on the block had two standard poodles who used to stand at the front door behind a screen. My cat would walk up the stairs and sit at the top teasing the poor dogs until one day, they broke through the screen door. My lil baby hissed at them and ran under a car (probably laughing at how these poor dogs would be in so much trouble for tearing down the screen door.

Well, here's my baby and his name was Lucifer and he was the devil's spawn .....

I must have been about eleven when our Tibbs disappeared when he was a kitten... We put a notice in a local shop-window asking if anyone had seen him but we didn't hold out much hope... My mum returned home from shopping one day all excited; she immediately asked my father where I was... when she saw me, she said "Look who I have here..." she opened her shopping-basket and took out our Tibbs! She said the people that had been looking after him were heart-broken to give him up, but they appreciated how much we were missing him...

He had many siblings in the area and he out-lived them all. He was with us 'til he was around eighteen. ...R.I.P Tibbles.

Sadly, the only pet here tonight is Persephone, my overweight hunk of furry black love, and she is sound asleep, in no mood for petting
