I just spent two hours writing a one-page personal statement (for a study program and fellowship). So, just how personal are these things supposed to get? I mean, is it bad if I use 'I' a lot? How does one write a good personal statement, anyway?

Ok. Just tell me if this sounds ok:

Oops.

You should add how Bran Muffins help keep you regular!

The explanation points help.

Aside from that, it seems nicely personal to me.

Thanks, Boodles. Maybe it was a little too personal. Edited it out. Gotta be careful.

I would expect the use of the word "I" in a personal statement, but that's just me.

I think you're more of a muffin than me!

I hate writing those personal statements. Especially with the "I" thing. You can mix it up with passive sentences and starting things with time references. "After I won the Nobel Peace Prize, I went on to become King of England." Of course, you are a muffin. You already knew that.

I have decided to adopt the following as my mission statement in life...

I stole it off of JMJs sigline...I put it into a calligraphy program that I have and printed it off...two copies - one for home and one for work.

cK's rules for living:
1. Life is short - shorter than you could imagine.
2. Everyday you have with someone is a gift
3. I have to live with myself, I'd better figure out how to enjoy it.
4. I am the only person I am required to deal with - everyone else is optional.
5. Honesty is easy, once you get in the habit
6. No one is as hard on me as I am.
Mash those all together .. bake in your head at approx. 96 degrees... you'll come out
with a pretty appreciative attitude toward those who choose to love you, and an
indifferent one toward those who don't and the ability to know the difference
between the two.

aaargh, I am applying for many jobs, they do love their job app forms over here I must say. So I have been writing and rewriting mine as well lately. Mixing up the sentence structure so they don't all start with "I" is a bit of a challenge indeed, but I guess it's par for the course, if ya wanna write stuff good and all.
