One of my time bench marks was that John Lennon was killed at the end of 1980. Kind of like DJ (during John) and AJ (after John) and I guess BJ (before John.)

I remember him dissing disco fervently (actually most anything to do with the seventies), so disco is DJ.

Ye gods, the 'films' from those days are dire in the extreme. Lo Rez or what ?
(now if they had a 'British' setup, it might have managed better).

Not 'film' but TV recording. Black and white films were much better.

Thanks for the help. My current story is set in the mid 80's. Heading may have been slightly misleading. I want to try a real historical piece at some point if my writing ever gets to that level.

But still a lot to consider even for the 80's as most issues can now be solved with a mobile phone.

You've got time to binge watch some 'historical' documentaries on the subject while social distancing, right? That is such an odd thing to type about the 1980's, but there are entire shows dedicated to the subject: I Love the 80's, I love the 80's: Strikes Back, etc. Otherwise, it is also fun to watch social documentaries filmed at the time, if nothing else, just for the giggles; examples: The Decline of Western Civilization Part I and (my favorite) Part II: The Metal Years, Paris is Burning which is about some of the drag scene in the 80's...there are others that I've watched, but their titles elude me at the moment. Anyway, that should be plenty to maybe getcha started.

At least the 80s is well referenced online.If you want to know what songs were in the top 40 in any week, what films were in cinemas, what videos were in Blockbuster, and most of the local news, it's all there. Even more esoteric searches like 'when did London newspapers start frothing about the existence of gay pubs under the guise of being concerned about public health' - it's there.

All my previous stories online (AO3) were set in 1984/5 for a niche fandom (some filth, some not). After completing a 100k novel draft I rather feel I remember 1985 better than last month...
