People Change,

Memories can change. Looking back on some things with the life experience I have now takes some of the sting and pain out of them.

'The only thing that is constant is change.' Hegel; a singularly wise c19 German philosopher.

People don't change. If you are an asshole when you are 20, you'll be an asshole when you're 60.

People change, but memories don't.

It could be the other way around: Memories change, but people don't.

But both statements are flawed.

Your memory can be selective, omitting the unpleasant detail or even completely erasing things you don't want to remember.

People can develop, grow out of attitudes they had when young, learn new skills including how to conduct relationships. But when you meet people you knew a long time ago, perhaps at a school reunion, both of you tend to revert to the attitudes you had then. Neither of you know who that person is now, only what you were.

Even History changes according to the perceptions of the historian.

I choose to remember the great things about my former girlfriends and to forget or minimise the arguments and differences which no longer matter. Who now cares that she hated a movie I took her to see? It was a crap movie anyway.
