This afternoon I replaced some of my electronics with an all in one system. On some boxes at the side of the road I put 2 DVD Players, a VCR and an older Surround Sound System. All of them work and I wasn't really willing to just throw them out. I put a sign on them saying they were free.

After several hours plenty of people had driven by but no one had bothered to pick up the electronics.

I got a bit curious, knowing mankind as I do. I went back out and took down the free sign. In it's stead I put up a sign saying they were for sale. $10.00 per unit. Just knock on the door.

Within 15 minutes everything had been "stolen". I'm talking all of the elctronics as well as the empty boxes. The only thing left behind was the sign.

Give it away and no one wants it, put a For Sale Sign on it and they'll steal it.

I threw out the sign as I chuckled to myself and hoped who ever had stolen the electronics got some use out of them.

Now that's odd. Whenever I put "free to a good home" on some discard, it rarely lasts an hour. Go figure.

Back in the day Nike (or Reebok, I forget) sold a running shoe for an extremely reasonable price. Except they wouldn't sell. So they jacked the price up double or triple and the shoes flew off the shelves. Perceived value is an interesting thing.

My first thought on reading the thread title was 'funny: ha-ha' of 'funny: strange'?

Turns out to be both. ;)

Something similar happened to me. I had an old box fan that was out of alignment, missing part of the grid covering it, etc. which I placed beside the trash cans ready for the garbage men. Shorter thereafter, someone knocked on my door, offering me five dollars for my fan. I told her what was wrong with it, told her she was welcome to it and refused her money.

I'll admit, I'm the one that would see the free sign and still knock on the door to be sure. I'd most likely have offered a little money if I could have. That's just me. Now, the boxes, I would have had no problem with picking up.

People are strange, aren't they.

I had a friend who needed to get rid of some extra furniture when he moved. I told him to just leave it on the curb and it would be gone by morning. He was just astonished. "People will just come by and take stuff? How do they know?"

Jomar is dead on about this. Serve some wine and tell the person (even people with highly trained pallets (is that the right pallet?)) that it's expensive and they rate it higher than the same exact wine that cost eight bucks a bottle. Perception is a wonderful thing. It's why love makes your partner taste better! :D

No, you want palate, I think. The double 'l' pallet is wooden.

Thank you Voluptuary. I doidn't feel like looking it up, and I'm tired as hell from being kept awake all night (dog sitting). Maybe one day those two words will eventually stay in my long term memory. :)
