To pediatricians, gun control is a public health issue, not a political one. But they're treading a fine line, and they know it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has begun a renewed push to try to get Congress to pass gun control measures, sending more than 100 pediatricians to Capitol Hill earlier this month. But others who have taken on the issue over the past decade have a warning for them: they can run afoul of the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups that are quick to paint anyone who advocates for gun control as a political extremist.

Their time would be better spent on inner city gang problems.;)

Dr. David Marcus, at our Boca Raton office, has been selected as a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on violence prevention, under the Violence, Injury and Poisoning Committee.
A periodic survey of American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) members administered by the AAP Task Force on Violence indicated that injury as a result of violence is a substantial problem being confronted by pediatricians in practices across the country. More than half of the respondents reported having recently seen a child who had sustained an intentional injury as a result of child maltreatment, and more than one third reported having recently treated a child with an injury resulting from domestic or community violence.
As a result, the AAP publish a policy on the pediatrician’s role in the prevention of youth violence, and launched several initiatives to combat violent injuries, including the subcommittee. The subcommittee’s goals are on gun safety, and the prevention of gang violence and bullying, etc. and is dedicated to educating the general pediatrician and pediatric subspecialist on the prevention of violence.
