Hey everyone.

Ok, so I have finally taken the plung and brought a Mac Book. I have been meaning to do it for some time, and now I finally have one.

The problem now is transferring all of my data etc from the laptop I use to a macbook. Not only will this be all the files I have saved for music/videos etc, but also the data in outlook as well as other things like bookmarks, itunes podcast subscriptions etc.

I guess the three main queries I have are:
1) How do I transfer all of my saved and organised emails on outlook to the mac email software. I don't know what the default one on the mac is, but I want my emails moved across as some still contain important info.

2) Are transferring bookmarks to safari easy from my laptop?

3) Does itunes keep all of your podcast subscriptions, or am I going to have to re subscribe on the itunes on the mac?

4) Can anyone recommend a good p2p transfer software on the mac? I was using emule on the laptop, but is this available for the mac. I have found one called amule, I am guessing this will be pretty similar?

5) Which media files from the PC will not be compatable with the mac?

I know this is a long question, but I appreciate you taking the time to read it :)

Welcome to a different world. I'm not expert in PC to Mac conversion, but I do know of some options. One that you probably do not have access to is the whole "take it to an Apple store" route. If you did have an Apple store nearby, they would do the transfer for you for free. This would include all of the files that you do have.

While looking about, I also found this option from Belkin: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10095560-56.html

It should be of some help. If you were going from Mac to Mac it would be as simple as getting a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable and using the migration assistant.

I hope that you're able to find a simple solution. Happy computing!

If you live near an apple store , you can just take both computers to them, and they'll do it for free. Go to apple.com, and you can search for stores, and then setup an appointment time online. When you get there, just "check in" with them, and you'll see your name on the screen. Easy stuff.

Basically, you can do everything you want to (below).

Mail is the mac mail app, and will interface with your outlook files.
you can easily xfer the bookmarks (there is an export feature - just export the bookmarks, email them to yourself, and then upload them on safari, but really, the transfer will take care of it all)
the only PC files which will not work are app specific files, but otherwise all audio and video files will work.
you might need VLC player for some windows media files.

here is a good place to start The Tao of Mac
Get the Switch to Mac book from Amazon here

You're going to love the mac! You;ll never go back!

Pc to Mac

you can do it wireless over your network.. or you can get a crossover Network cable and plug the two together and do it that way.... I like the apple store and free the best.. but I dont have one in my town..

outlook specifically uses a file to store all of your items. the file extension is .pst. if you've been using outlook for a while, you'll find it's easily multiple GBs, esp if you tend to send/receive large files.

the .pst is located by default under a given user profile folder.

unfortunately, i know next to nothing re: OS X or mac-native applications. see if there's an option to import from outlook/.pst files: that should do it for you.

I have no apple store nearby otherwise I would of gone in and done this..

I tried setting up the network from my mac.. my laptop could connect to the mac network wirelessly, but then i was lost as to what to do next.

I am going to transfer most of my files using an external usb hard drive, but i just wanted to know if the boomark files from msn were compatable as well as the files for my outlook too.

Oh, plus I am getting error messages when I am trying to export the messages from outlook :(

Something about error occurred while initializing MAPI.

You can always call apple and they will help you over the phone. They have always been very patient and helpful with us.

Welcome to Mac and know you're in good hands! They are easier to use and I have never crashed their OSx yet. Believe me, I'm the queen of computer crashing! IT used to try to prevent me from using the computers. I told them to get a Mac....
