Over the past several days, upon booting, my PC shows me this message:

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: Maxtor 34098H4 - (PM).

Is my computer being nice enough to tell me that my HD is about to die, or is this some sort of a virus its contracted? I've never seen this before and my anti-virus hasn't picked up anything.

Many thanks.

I've never seen it before either. What does Scandisk (thorough mode) say about the health of your drive? (or disk diagnostic of your choice.)

It's a literal message, there are redundant things on your hard disk and they're reporting inconsistencies. Get another hard drive of the same or larger size and plan to "clone" your old one onto it.

Basically your hardware is telling you eventually it's kaput.

Get the new one while the old one can still boot and life is good. Wait too long and you won't be able to access your data.

I went to the Maxtor website and looked up Smart failure & 34098h4.

It means just what it said.

34098H4 is the model # of your 40.9 GB hard drive.

SMART is some software that is keeping an eye on your hard drive.

Islandman, make a hardware inventory and bookmark each manufacturer's site. They usually have driver updates among other support.

you're smart.

Hey dude - here's the simple answer:

Run – don't walk – to the store. It's time to buy a new hard drive.

I repeat - RUN!

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. SMART can warn when the hard drive is going down with enough lead time to actually let you do something about it. And... While you're at the store, pick up Drive Copy from PowerQuest. This software, which costs less than $50, walks you through the steps of copying data from your old drive to the new one. (Or use Norton Ghost).

Back up your stuff... FAST!

Much thanks, Mr. Dillinger. Mr. Flirt's given me a copy of Ghost.

But sometimes PCs and geeks work for the wenches ;)

The wenches just love when the geeks have to crawl around to get to those PCs too, don't they!
