I am in the process of making a deal with an ebook publisher, and I am told I need to have a paypal account. I have never done this, and I am hesitant to give sensitive financial information to a stranger like that. Does anybody have any advice. The story is one that was rejected by Lit. as being too violent.

Paypal is considered to be quite secure. Are they suggesting they do it for you? You should set it up yourself. I believe Ebay bought it, but I'm not sure. I'll check.

Checked. Yep, ebay owns paypal.

I've got a PayPal account for a year and haven't had any problems with it. I can't recall giving it any sensitive information when I signed up for it.

I have done transfers between it and one of my bank accounts several times, but my account information was entered on a separate occasion.

I would recommend a distinct password for PayPal though.

Paypal is the way Ebay operates, and is widely considered the standard method of personal online payment. As long as you keep your password safe, anyway. To make or receive payments, all you need is the person's email address associated with their paypal account. You can set up your account to allow transfers between your Paypal account and your regular bank account.

It's simple, really.

I've had a paypal account since around '98 and never had any security worries at all. :)

I have dealt with paypal since 2001 & had no issues.
YOU set it up though.. not the publisher.
Alot of big sites use it, especially e-bay :)
you can access your transaction history, add a credit card or a bank account...
I trust it more than an e-transfer through the banks..

I don't use paypall or make online transactions, but Paypal has the reputation of being as secure as a mainstream bank account.

The only thing I can suggest is that if you're worried about having yourpaypal account linked to your main (only) bank account, open a second account just for paypal/online transactions.

Good idea.

I've never had a problem with PayPal, or with any online transaction, but nothing is completely hacker proof. Opening a secondary checking account to link with PayPal, and keeping the first one private, is an extra, small, annoying step that makes huge sense.

I operate a small consulting business out of my home and I have a checking account I use for that. That would be the account I would use, rather than the household account. I never have more than a few hundred dollars in the business accont.

Paypal is relatively safe and easy to transfer money on the net. Protect your password and be wary of phising scams.

Right. I will come up with a password and never tell anybody but my wife what it is. I will write it down though, in case it needs to be accessed by somebody else, for some reason.

I, being the paranoid that I am, would still set up a third account -- a simple savings account if paypal will accept that -- to further isolate the paypal linked account from your normal banking accounts.

For what it's worth, my Paypal account did get "borrowed" by some punk once who used it to BUY pretend money for World of Warcraft. I mention this not to scare you, but to point out how well Paypal handled the whole thing.

I was out of town when it happened but after about the fourth or fifth transaction, Paypal shut down the account for suspicious activity. They contacted me, we got things straight and they verified that I hadn't made the transactions, and they credited back all the money that was stolen. Because my bank account was hooked to my Paypal account money was removed from checking to cover some of the transactions and Paypal credited all that back, as well, and initiated the EFT themselves to replace it in my bank account.

It took all of three days for things to get straightened back out, all my money to be credited, and my life to return to normal in a surprisingly painless process.

I still highly recommend Paypal because of their excellent customer service even when something does go wrong.

Paypal are fairly good. I was paid through them while i did some article work for an online magazine. The main annoyance is they will take a cut of any money coming in.

i have not had a problem with paypal, though if you forget your password, change email addy, etc. it can get messy. i had to phone them.

you have to decide if debiting is against your VISA or your checking acct. as some say, creating a special account would not be a bad idea, though clearly your bank might do something weird--i.e. go into your main acct, to cover an overdraft. the only way would be to have a separate acct at another bank.

i used debits against VISA for a long time, rather than give the banking info. OTOH, it might be argued that if have a VISA limit of several thousand, i'm opening myself to bigger losses, although VISA sometimes does not hold fraud against the cardholder.

be aware too, the paypal has some 'morals' policies. e.g. they don't handle some porn or sex related transactions.

I don't have a paypal account, but have considered it before. Please forgive a silly question, but can you link it to a savings account rather than a checking account?

I've used Paypal for years, without any problems at all. At least five or six years, and all it's done is make my life online easier.

I wish everyone paid by and accepted Paypal.

Fear Not.

This is something I didn't know. I contacted them to start opening an account, and listed my email address. When they saw that, they may have rejected me because it is very similar to my handle here. I will try again with my act cleaned up.

The business account is in one bank and the household account is in another and I have a money market account in a third. If the business account gets to be more than about $300, I will write checks against it and transfer the excess to one of the others. I don't expect very much money to be involved anyhow, although I hope I'm wrong.

I stil have to finish editing the story to expand certain aspects of it, besides general proofreading and some changes in wording.

Thanks, people. I appreciate the advice and info because this is all new to me. :)

I think you can set it up to any account, I have mine set to one that never has money in it until I put it in to cover something Id like to get. That way nothing more than what I buy can come off the account. Just my way of keeping it secure.
