Apparently the Women's Soccer Team (USWNT) got paid 18% of what the men got paid and they're upset about it. What's the solution? Pay the women the same as men? Drop the men's pay and raise the women's? Maybe we should have the women compete against the men? Equal pay for equal work. The labor impasse between the U.S. women’s national team players association and U.S. Soccer is over.

The two sides announced on Wednesday that they have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement in a five-year deal that will run through 2021.

“I am incredibly proud of this team and the commitment we have shown through this entire process,” said U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe in a joint statement released by the two sides.

As Forbes noted, the last Women’s World Cup four years ago “brought in almost $73 million, of which the players got 13 [percent].

The 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion, of which 9 [percent] went to the players.

The men still pull the World Cup money wagon. The men’s World Cup in Russia generated over $6 billion in revenue, with the participating teams sharing $400 million, less than 7 [percent] of revenue.


Meanwhile, the Women’s World Cup is expected to earn $131 million for the full four-year cycle 2019-22 and dole out $30 million to the participating teams.”

The women already receive a greater percentage of the Revenue generated than the men.

The women also receive a Base Salary. The men receive nothing.

So, take away their $100,000 base salary and pay them 7% of the Revenue instead of 23%.

The women’s team collectively bargained for and won a pay structure that guarantees them salaries, severance pay, medical benefits, and some performance-based bonuses. The women’s team wanted the security of salary-based pay rather than purely performance-based pay, and they wanted to guarantee a salary even for players who were on the roster but didn’t play.
