My little brother... I show him something again and again... I don't know if he simply lacks aptitude or if he's as dumb as I've come to believe... He doesn't seem to be malingering... So, I feel bad getting pissed... Who else deals with this? Vent, if needed.

“Difficulty shows what men are. Therefore when a difficulty falls upon you, remember that God, like a trainer of wrestlers, has matched you with a rough young man. Why? So that you may become an Olympic conqueror; but it is not accomplished without sweat.”

I've worked with a lot of Autistic kids over the years and this is a trait that is consistent with them and no doubt others with information processing problems. You tell them something and they do listen but their brains file it away in the wrong place, they can't retrieve the information in the order it went in, they have major sequencing difficulties. Sometimes it's better to give them written instructions and even pictures of each step in the process.

I'm not saying this is the case with your younger brother but if you can't get it through to him one way then you may need to try a different approach before you both go crazy :D

Nothing to for me vent with specifically but it was always helpful for me to be reminded:

1. Maybe he learns differently then is being presented or his strengths lie elsewhere.

"If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid"

2. Is he disinterested or just not understanding the subject/task as it is being presented.

3. As teachers/mentors it'a also easy to forget what it's like to learn something from the beginning if we already know it. It's called the curse of knowledge.

"teachers have difficulty teaching novices because they cannot put themselves in the position of the student. A brilliant professor might no longer remember the difficulties that a young student encounters when learning a new subject."

#1 is the best quote ever. Fish In a Tree is an actual book and worth a read if you get a chance.

Wise words (As usual)

I'll admit that I cannot learn from watching. You can show me something a hundred times and I just won't get it. The best way for me to learn is to have someone stand beside me and walk me through it.

I don't know what you are trying to teach your brother but just something for you to consider.

Best teaching method for those you love? Don't bail their asses out. They hate you...blame you...refuse to talk to you...until they get it and forgive you for loving them.
