Rick walked into the admissions office at the university and asked to register to audit the anatomy class he was advised that it was too late to sign up even for an audit and asked to speak to the Dean of admissions.
"I'm sorry, sir, our policy is—"
"Will a $3,000 dollar donation cover it?"
The Dean handed the cheque to the clerk. "I'm sure we can make an exception this time."
"Perfect, I appreciate it. Would you show me to the class? A friend of mine is in the class and I'm pretty sure it's about to start."
The Dean's head suddenly cocked in curiosity at the comment. Rick knew what he was thinking. Something didn't seem right. Rick nodded slowly encouraging the man. He received a quick nod in response, and he was lead to a neighbouring building. The bell had just sounded as they approached the room.
"Perhaps you should explain to the professor the extenuating circumstances?"
"Certainly, sir."
They entered the room together, and Rick followed hot on the heels of the Dean. The room rumbled to quiet curiosity as the professor's eyes widened in surprise.
"What are you doing here, Rick?"
"I'm auditing your class, Wendy."
"Like hell you are."
The Dean's gazed alternated between the two of them. "Uh. Is Professor—"
"No," Rick said abruptly as he turned to face the room and drew the note out of his pocket and opened it. "Dear, miss Lexi. If you believe you will ever pass my class while you are dating Rick, you are out of your mind. Make an appearance each day if you wish, but it will not help unless you quit seeing him. Maybe you think you can fight me after you fail the course, but you won't win. Better to give him up or drop out now rather than to waste your time."
Rick turned and handed the note to the Dean. "No signature, but you recognize the handwriting?"
"Yes, sir. Let me keep this and—"
Rick snatched the note from the Dean's hand. "Not a chance. This goes to the media if you don't get this shit sorted out. She's badgering one student and threatening failure because—"
Wendy's abrupt laugh caught both men off guard.
"I have tenure."
"Professor Dawkins."
Rick's eyes narrowed. "Are you fucking any of your students for their grades this time, Wendy? Did you know that guys? Want to bump your grade? All you have to do is bump her."
There was a slight chorus of laughter that died quickly as Wendy's eyes flicked around the room.
"Now, Dean, I'm sure you'll be looking into this and being sure that no one is singled out for extra work unless it's warranted by performance?" Ricks eyes bore into the man.
"I will."
"Good. I'll go take my seat."
Rick moved over toward Lexi. Dale was sitting beside her. He picked up his books and moved so that Rick could take his seat. Lexi's lips were pursed as he sat down.
"That was really sweet, but you shouldn't have done that."
"Why not?"
She shook her head and looked at Wendy whose head was hung slightly as she gripped the podium. She looked up finally and nodded. She had an a look of satisfaction on her face.
"All right class. Let's see if we can't expand the class reading list for you all."
